Senate session begins to deliberate on bill for 27th Constitutional Amendment

In a rare move, a Senate session has been convened today — on a Sunday — with a one-point agenda to deliberate on the bill for a 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The 26-page bill was tabled in the Senate yesterday amid the opposition’s outcry over the pace and scope of the proposed changes, just hours after its approval by the federal cabinet. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presided over the federal cabinet meeting the gave its nod to the proposed legislation via a video link from Baku, where he had travelled with Field Marshal Asim Munir to attend Azerbaijan’s Victory Day ceremony.
