Stepan Usyk (Ukrainian – Степан Григорович Усик) 1925-2001 – famous Ukrainian painter, member of Transcarpathian painter school. He was born on June 16, 1925, in village Studenyky, Kyiv region, died on September 11, 2001, in Uzhhorod.[1]

During World War II Stepan Usyk was sent by fascist occupiers on forced labour to Germany. He was one of two who come back from 14 forcibly sent people who survived this horror and returned home.

Stepan Usyk studied at the Kyiv Higher School of Applied Arts and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. He participated in the reconstruction of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and in the restoration of the St. Sophia Cathedral of Kyiv; in particular, he personally covered 15 kg of gold leaf on the domes of the St. Sophia Cathedral of Kyiv, founded by Yaroslav the Wise, father of the Anne de Kyiv, Queen of France in 1051-1060. He received his art education at the Kyiv Art School.[2]

Stepan Usyk is also the author of paintings dedicated to the wooden churches of the Carpathian region, which are part of the heritage of humanity, recognized by UNESCO. In particular, the painting “Church of the Intercession in Kostryno”.[5]

Stepan Usyk’s paintings are in museums and private collections in Ukraine, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, USA and other countries.
