On Sept 6, 2025, there was an addition referring to Durga as a courtesan and that “Hindus” use “gobar”, “gomootra” as well as “soils from brothels” to create her idols. This was posted by an IP address from Bangladesh. The claim is false. Furthermore, the “source” cited for this claim is a 3-minute clip posted by the BBC two years ago describing how sex workers celebrate Durga Puja, and does not state that Durga is a “sex worker”. This newly added section also makes references to various claims about “Aryans” using a woman to kill Mahishasura, with no reliable or credible citations or historical commentary to back this up. Thus, this addition should be deleted due to lack of credible citations and for its potentially inflammatory claims. <!– Template:Unsigned –>— Preceding unsigned comment added by SeaAnSand (talk • contribs) 00:33, 23 September 2025 (UTC) <!–Autosigned by SineBot–>

:I specifically refer to this section:

:”According to many claims, due to the fact that the woman was a courtesan, Hindus use cow urine, Ganges water, cowdung along with the soil of brothels (four G: Gomutra, Gobar, Gangajal or Ganikalaya (brothel)’s soil) to make idols of Durga in Durga Puja.”

:This is unverified and the citation quoted (No. 34) does NOT mention this. It states how sex workers celebrate Durga Puja, not that Durga was a sex worker. This is potentially inflammatory and intend to libel a revered figure for Hindus. SeaAnSand (talk) 00:37, 23 September 2025 (UTC)

I doubt all the green skin thingy and the form of a giant buffalo is cooked up in the TV serials. take a look at the photo of the statue. All the durga, chamundeshwari temples in southern India have this mahishasura statue as far as I’ve known.

Much too much text in one paragraph. Plus, is this copy and paste? Kortoso (talk) 22:44, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Was this lifted from:

Duplication detector says maybe(I set the minimum number of words to 4; default is 2). However, for what it’s worth, the blog doesn’t appear copyrighted. Paris1127 (talk) 01:59, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It’s Vice versa. The blog comment is in October 2013. This is the September version linked [1].–Redtigerxyz Talk 18:22, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am trying to break it up into smaller paragraphs. Kortoso (talk) 21:02, 26 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you go to http://self.gutenberg.org/articles/mahishasura it says, “Improve this at the source”, so I clicked “source” and found myself on the Wikipedia article. Their sourcing statement is a lie. Ogress 18:12, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Only the first paragraph seemed relevant in the section about Mahishasura’s sister, so I removed the rest. I could not see the connection between her and any of the other information. If anyone would like to go back and edit those paragraphs to incorporate a connection with her, please do so. Thank you! There’s also some archaic language in here, which leads me to believe that some of this was copied from it. I’ve tried to modernize some of the text. Kortoso (talk) 18:36, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please double check whether Mahishi is the name of Mahishasura’s mother or his sister? Also, is there really a story in Kerala of his sister wanting to avenge his killing by the goddess Durga? —NJ (talk) 18:38, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here is Mahishi’s entry: Mahishi_(Mahishasur’s_Sister). Apparently she’s his sister. Did you see anyplace where she is his mother? Sometimes myths go both ways. Sorry, but that article is extremely wordy as well. Kortoso (talk) 19:26, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The article variously mentions Mahishi as his mother and his sister. I’m sorry but I cannot accept the accuracy of this article until someone verifies the facts. —NJ (talk) 00:30, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don’t know if this is the right template for a mythology article. Probably we are looking for an authorative citation. Kortoso (talk) 19:30, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have found these websites: The New Indian Express, India.com and [Times of India regarding Asur Puja a.k.a. Hudur Durga that can be added to the article, but not sure where to add. It is about the worshipping of the Asur community mourning the death of Mahishasura twice annually. — 50-Man (talk) 17:03, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
