Latest revision as of 04:54, 2 February 2026

The prose list of potential candidates I converted to a table was largely a list of unsuccesful 2025 candidates. I cut this down to those who:

– made it to the two-candidate-preferred count in 2025 (or, in one case, Mandy Nolan, narrowly missed 2CP but came second on primaries); and

– unambiguously said they would run again for the same seat in 2028 (i.e. didn’t just say something vague about “seeking office again in the future”). Polonius (talk) 08:52, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Given almost all incumbent MPs and senators recontest their seats, it seems premature and WP:UNDUE to single out a smattering of somewhat random candidates for inclusion in the article. In several cases the sourcing is poor (i.e. Instagram stories) or is ambiguous about whether they will actually stand. I think this section should be removed until we can produce the usual standalone, properly sourced candidate list, i.e. probably sometime in 2027. I T B F 📢 05:15, 9 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

We can start the list as soon as there is a sourceable candidate declaring their intention to run specifically in the next federal election. Onetwothreeip (talk) 08:27, 17 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The infobox is currently including the parties that all agree on: Labor, Coalition and Greens. There is various contested support for whether One Nation and/or independents should also be included. Onetwothreeip (talk) 09:09, 30 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Include KAP, CA and maybe independent because they have seats in the house (like seen in the 2025 Australian federal election. OneNation should only be added should they win a seat at the election, which is unlikely. They can be in the info box of the 2028 senate election article which is yet to be created. Mockup of this on my sandbox. Youshouldchooseausernamethat (talk) 12:59, 4 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Centre alliance shouldn’t be included. It’s literally just an independent. We shouldn’t crowd the info box and mislead people for the purpose of rigid allegiance to the rules. One nation should be included as they are poling high in the polls. Sometimes above the former coalition. Most infoboxes for other elections in other countries include parties who are expected to win seats. Which one nation is.
Regardless the overall thing is, if someone googles “next Australian federal election” finds this page, and looks at the info box. They should get the important information they need to know. Centre alliance does NOT need to be something they know about, it misleads them that it’s something important. but they probably should know about the party sometimes polling second.
At the very least a party should have to run in two seats to be included in the info box. Otherwise they are just independents Pencilceaser123 (talk) 23:37, 1 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
They’ve been included in every election since they’ve had a seat. If you’re proposing an “other” section for KAP and CA, that might work. But further consensus is needed. Youshouldchooseausernamethat (Youshouldtalk) 04:54, 2 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
One Nation can show up if Joyce formally defects, giving them a seat in the lower house. Otherwise, KAP, CA and Independents should appear. 2 brown eyes (talk) 02:37, 5 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
a (now archived) discussion on the previous election already came to the consensus that having seats=infobox, and independents are notable enough to also be displayed. SquishyWikii (talk) 09:46, 8 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Assigning LNP and CLP vote totals on a seat by seat basis to Liberals or Nationals.

Liberal:

  • Queensland: 828,298 (26.30%)
    • On the basis of the party room of the sitting MPs: Bowman, Fadden, Fairfax, Fisher, Groom, Herbert, Longman, McPherson, Moncrieff, Moreton, Wright
    • On the basis of the party room of the last Coalition MP: Blair, Bonner, Brisbane, Dickson, Forde, Griffith, Leichhardt, Lilley, Oxley, Petrie, Ryan
    • On the basis of geography: Rankin
  • The Northern Territory: 35,785 (33.84%)
    • On the basis that convention is that CLP MPs sit with the Liberals
  • Federal: 4,069,299 (26.27%)

Nationals:

  • Queensland: 271,325 (8.61%)
    • On the basis of the party room of the sitting MPs: Capricornia, Dawson, Flynn, Hinkler, Maranoa, Wide Bay

On the basis of the party room of the last Coalition MP: Kennedy

Can’t figure out how, or if, to put this into the article at this stage, but if the Coalition remains split at the election and run separately in Queensland and/or the NT, it will be necessary to have an apples to apples comparison. Might also be useful as a figure to compare to polling totals that don’t poll the LNP separately. Not Another NPC (talk) 22:44, 27 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
