This is my first time posting, so I suspect I didn’t add the “connected contributor” reference properly. Please let me know how to properly make the declaration.
To Elvishrose’s point, may I suggest the following small changes to the intro paragraph:
“Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) are U.S. and Canadian[4] non-profit organizations that employ grassroots organizing and direct advocacy on issues such as consumer protection, public health and transportation. Many of the PIRGs are closely affiliated with the Fund for the Public Interest….”
That is, many, but not nearly all, PIRGs are “federated”. (Let me know if you need a list of those that are not significantly affiliated with each other.) So, it’s more accurate to knock out the phrase “a federation of” and to add “Many of” to the reference to the Fund for the Public Interest. Wynott (talk) 17:51, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
https://pirg.org/about/ seems to say otherwise. ManducatingMouser (talk) 07:55, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. The PIRG.org/about webpage refers to a federation of most, but not all, of the PIRGs. For example, the map does not show the PIRGs in Minnesota and Montana, as they’re not affiliated with USPIRG It also doesn’t show any of the PIRGs in Canada, as there are no links between the US and Canadian PIRGs. 71.218.111.44 (talk) 19:11, 23 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the map refers just to affiliations via USPIRG. However, the current text refers to affiliation via the Fund for the Public Interest. In addition to the non-USPIRG groups, the PIRGs in New York and Vermont are not a part of the Fund for the Public Interest. 71.218.111.44 (talk) 19:16, 23 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I have made the necessary changes, thank you. ManducatingMouser (talk) 08:47, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. 71.218.117.102 (talk) 17:52, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have a few other suggested changes to a part of the intro section, which is a bit outdated.
It now reads “employ grassroots organizing and direct advocacy on issues such as consumer protection, public health and transportation”.
The first part doesn’t include the two types of work that are most employed by the PIRGs: research (which is, after all, their middle name) and public education.
The second part doesn’t include several of the issues on which it now works most: waste and recycling, clean water and air, and energy.
I recommend tweaking the text to read “…employ research, public education, grassroots organizing and direct advocacy on issues such as consumer protection, clear water and air, waste and recycling, energy, public health and transportation.” 71.218.117.102 (talk) 18:12, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. 71.218.117.102 (talk) 17:51, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The suggested changes haven’t shown up on the PIRG page. Is there another step that needs to be taken? 97.118.137.46 (talk) 22:11, 30 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Maryland Public Interest Research Group article has been unsourced for 13 years. Instead of deletion, a smerger might be needed. Bearian (talk) 21:00, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds right to me. Marquardtika (talk) 21:33, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What is a “smerger”? 71.218.117.102 (talk) 22:18, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And, yes, the article is rather out-of-date, but could easily be updated. 71.218.117.102 (talk) 22:20, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A selective merge of Maryland Public Interest Research Group would be reasonable, given that it is entirely unreferenced; given that it has been tagged as unreferenced for 14 years or so, deletion would also be perfectly reasonable. Klbrain (talk) 16:05, 2 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What would be needed to update the Maryland page? I can provide plenty of info . . .though I’d rather focus on updating the overall PIRG page. 71.218.250.83 (talk) 18:14, 6 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Bearian: I think there’s support for a “smerger” here. Want to do the honors? Marquardtika (talk) 21:22, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, can I have until this weekend? Bearian (talk) 21:28, 18 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
