:Is there a discussion that has led to this request? I see that [[Naming customs of Hispanic America]] exists, but I have not read it in detail. Do all “Hispanic American” names follow the same pattern as Spanish names, as indicated in the sandbox? – [[User:Jonesey95|Jonesey95]] ([[User talk:Jonesey95|talk]]) 21:14, 3 January 2026 (UTC) |

::Hi, no, there has been no discussion. I have read [[Naming customs of Hispanic America]] and it seems that the overwhelming majority do follow the same pattern as Spanish names – fathers surname followed by mothers surname. There will be exceptions as some countries (e.g. Chile) do allow people to chose their two surnames or only have one surname, but obviously this template shouldn’t be used for those people. Would it be possible to allow Spanish to use the 3rd parameter for a marital name, as in the template above? My reason for requesting this is that the template above can only be a hatnote, not a footnote. GanzKnusper (talk) 10:01, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
Change In this <article>, the <mod1><family_name> is '' <1>''<mod2>. <postscript> and {{hatnote|In this <article>, the <mod1><family_name> is <1><mod2>. <postscript>}} to <article>, the <mod1><family_name> is <1><mod2>. <postscript></nowiki> and {{hatnote|In this <article>, the <mod1><family_name> is <1><mod2>. <postscript>}}. The reason why I am saying this is because some people (including me) think it’s a bit weird to have hatnotes with italics in the links. 2600:1700:6180:6290:F857:C7E1:9A7E:A35B (talk) 21:49, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
Not done for now: please establish a consensus for this alteration before using the{{Edit template-protected}}template. See MOS on “Words as words”. – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:57, 12 June 2025 (UTC)
See in Thai name#Forms of address, I learned in Thai custom, a Thai person should be referred mainly by given name instead of surname. I also watched a match of Thailand football team and saw all players’ name on jersey are given name too. E.g Chanathip Songkrasin‘s name on jersey is “Chanathip”, not “Songkrasin”. See in his Thai wiki, he is also usually referred as “Chanathip” (ชนาธิป), while “Songkrasin” is (สรงกระสินธ์) always belong after “Chanathip” or his parent’s given name. However, this template has not explained it in Thai custom. Can anyone fix it? Like adding “In accordance with Thai custom, this person should be referred to by the given name, Chanathip”. Thanks. Please add an option for Hispanic names as I have done on the sandbox. Thank you.–Obi2canibe (talk) 21:08, 3 January 2026 (UTC) Obi2canibe (talk) 21:08, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
