Japanese manga series

This Monster Wants to Eat Me (Japanese: 私を喰べたい、ひとでなし, Hepburn: Watashi o Tabetai, Hito de Nashi) is a Japanese yuri manga series written and illustrated by Sai Naekawa. It has been serialized in ASCII Media WorksDengeki Maoh magazine since August 2020, and is licensed in English by Yen Press. The series follows Hinako, a regular girl, and Shiori, a mermaid who wishes to one day eat her. An anime television series adaptation produced by Studio Lings premiered in October 2025.

Since losing her family in an accident, Hinako has had a vague wish to die, though she feels that she cannot go through with it herself. One day, she meets a mermaid named Shiori, who tells Hinako that her flesh and blood are especially delicious to yōkai; Shiori is one of them. Wanting to eat Hinako herself, Shiori promises to protect her from other yōkai who also want to eat Hinako until she is at her most delicious, and that is when Shiori will eat her. Due to her feelings regarding the accident, Hinako accepts this fate.

Hinako Yaotose (八百歳 比名子, Yaotose Hinako)
Voiced by: Reina Ueda[2]
The main character and a student at Shiomi High School. After losing her parents and older brother Mutsuki in a tragic accident, she desires to die so she can reunite with them, but cannot bring herself to end her own life. Her unique blood attracts yōkai who want to eat her, which was triggered by some nasty bruises that she had following the accident. Upon meeting a yōkai named Shiori, who intends to eat her once she is at her peak and protect her from other yōkai, Hinako agrees to this as she sees it as a way out of her painful situation. It is later discovered that some of Shiori’s blood mixed with hers that altered her DNA, allowing her to not get sick and ward off other yōkai, which also enabled her to survive the accident.
Shiori Oumi (近江 汐莉, Ōmi Shiori)
Voiced by: Yui Ishikawa[3]
A powerful mermaid yōkai who plans to eat Hinako when she is at her most tasty point while also promising to protect her from other yōkai who are also targeting her until then. Despite her goal, she grows close to Hinako. She presents herself as an ordinary human girl and only reveals her true form when fighting another yōkai. It is soon revealed that Shiori mixed some of her blood when her family died, ensuring her survival. So far, Miko is the only yōkai who is strong enough to fight Shiori at an equal level.
Miko Yashiro (社 美胡, Yashiro Miko)
Voiced by: Fairouz Ai[3]
Hinako’s classmate and childhood friend, who is very protective of her, to the annoyance of the other classmates. She grows jealous of Shiori’s relationship with Hinako. However, it is discovered that she is also a yōkai, who at first wants to eat Hinako, but soon desires to protect her instead at the request of her family and slowly gives up her yōkai powers so to continue being friends with Hinako; she now eats fish to calm her hunger. Even so, it is hinted that she has ulterior motives. Her true form is a giant kitsune. She is also powerful enough to match Shiori’s strength.
Iso-onna
An ocean vampire yōkai, who has many arms and long hairs used to capture prey. She is the first to try and eat Hinako, but is stopped and killed by Shiori.
Noyama

It is later discovered that she is a yōkai who was once a human, having the ability to twist her head all the way around to reveal a second mouth with a big tongue on the back. She is technically an undead yōkai and can’t die again. Although she intended to eat Hinako, she instead left her alone as Shiori’s blood found within Hinako’s body doesn’t make her tasty enough to her anymore.
Ako, Fuyuka, and Yu
Three students who attend basketball training camp with Hinako, Shiori, and Miko.

An anime television series adaptation was announced on October 21, 2024. It is produced by Studio Lings with Infinite [ja] handling general production, and directed by Yūsuke Suzuki, with Naoyuki Kuzuya serving as chief director, Mitsutaka Hirota writing the scripts, Sō Ikuyama designing the characters, and Keiji Inai composing the music.[2][23] The series premiered on October 2, 2025, on AT-X and other networks.[3] The opening theme song is “nie” (“贄-nie-“; ‘Sacrifice’), performed by Yoshino, while the ending theme song is “Lily” (リリィ, Rirī), performed by Reina Ueda as her character Hinako Yaotose.[24] Crunchyroll is streaming the series.[25] Medialink licensed the series in Southeast Asia.[26]

The series has been well-received. It featured in MyAnimeList‘s 2025 “You Should Read This Manga” list within the Unique Art/Story category.[30]

Rebecca Silverman writing for Anime News Network praised the series, believing it to be an “interesting combination of genres that works better than it should.”[31] Erica Friedman of Yuricon gave the first volume an overall positive review, noting that the end of the first volume “contains a scene so creepy and violent that I ought to have been both startled and a little grossed out, but both art and story work so beautifully that it was merely a breathtakingly excellent scene.”[32] Adam Symchuk of Asian Movie Pulse wrote of the series that it was a “perfect companion piece to the acclaimed BL horror title The Summer Hikaru Died,” and that due to their close release dates it may be difficult for readers not to draw comparisons between the two. He further expanded that This Monster Wants to Eat Me is a “slightly less profound and visually striking version [of The Summer Hikaru Died but] will be a welcome treat for many still salivating for more terror twisted with romance.”[33]
