:That is an image by [[J.R.R. Tolkien]] mate, what are you talking about? It’s in multiple editions of the hobbit and I have provided a source in the description of the image. [[User:Paccyd33|Paccyd33]] ([[User talk:Paccyd33#top|talk]]) 09:34, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

:@Chiswick Chap: Here is a database of all tolkien related images. https://tai.tolkienists.org/tai/17/ The very article I have added this to references it. Check the link on the ‘this painting inspired tolkien’s work’. This is the piece it is talking about. I have just looked up a youtube video to confirm and it is indeed plate 9.[[User:Paccyd33|Paccyd33]] ([[User talk:Paccyd33#top|talk]]) 09:39, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

:: It is certainly Tolkien’s, I mistook your behaviour for out-and-out fan-dalism of which there’s plenty about. It would have helped if you had provided an edit comment: uncommented edits are typical of fans and vandals, as is removal of anti-fan art comments. For future reference, *every* edit should be commented: this is of advantage both to you and to every other editor who is watching the page (and to the anti-vandal patrol people, who work hard enough already). I am doubtful whether the fair usage rationale is valid for a theme article: such things are uncontentious for the cover pages of books in book articles (e.g. LOTR itself), but since there are many possible themes per book, the rationale is a deal thinner. I’m not going to take the image to XfD but I won’t be surprised if someone else does. [[User:Chiswick Chap|Chiswick Chap]] ([[User talk:Chiswick Chap|talk]]) 10:04, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

:::That was a mistake and I pretty much saw that immediately. Funnily enough, I was about to add a caption to the image when i spotted the talk page message. Is there a fair use category more applicable to it? I saw that the bilbo and sauron articles had a tolkien-made image, so I thought that would be fine. I’ll see if I can improve the rationale.[[User:Paccyd33|Paccyd33]] ([[User talk:Paccyd33#top|talk]]) 10:10, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

:::: The thing that would have helped would have been an edit comment, which could have been quite short, like “Tolkien’s image with NFUR”. I don’t think jiggling with NFUR categories will work. It is the case that the more specific categories attract less attention from the folks who patrol images, but you can’t pretend this is anything other than what it is. All non-free images have a fragile status at best; [[WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS|existence of other images]] should not be taken as any kind of defence. [[User:Chiswick Chap|Chiswick Chap]] ([[User talk:Chiswick Chap|talk]]) 10:28, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

::::: I’m not looking to pretend it is something it isn’t, which is why i’m asking if I should adjust it. Upload wizard added the comment ‘Any derivative work based upon the cover art would be a copyright violation, so creation of a free image is not possible’, when it is not the cover art. Does that matter? Can I just change the wording? [[User:Paccyd33|Paccyd33]] ([[User talk:Paccyd33#top|talk]]) 10:35, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:DCHighVolumeBatman.jpeg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of non-free use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. —B-bot (talk) 02:09, 18 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I note your addition of the Nasmith image, which is in itself well-justified here. However, the article now contains unusually many non-free images, something that has once already attracted admin attention, causing me to cut down the number of non-frees radically. Instead, we have non-free images dispersed among many articles, one per artist basically. We can risk this one (fingers crossed) but to add any more really would be tempting fate. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:39, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sorry if that causes any trouble. Hope all is well, thanks for the response. Paccyd33 (talk) 07:48, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
