Hello! I was writing a wikipedia page and using my sandbox to draft it because I thought that was the correct thing to do. Now the data is completely gone. Is there any way to recover this? —Swepf (talk) 16:31, 17 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Copied from Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous) § Help us decide the name of the new Abstract Wikipedia project because this page is listed on Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Subscribe.

Hello. Please help pick a name for the new Abstract Wikipedia wiki project. This project will be a wiki that will enable users to combine functions from Wikifunctions and data from Wikidata in order to generate natural language sentences in any supported languages. These sentences can then be used by any Wikipedia (or elsewhere).

There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of candidates, with votes beginning on 20 October and 17 November 2025. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on mid-December 2025. If you would like to participate, then please learn more and vote now at meta-wiki.
Thank you!

Qcoder1530, you appear to be WP:NOTHERE. — Qwerfjkltalk 08:25, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello dear mentor! I’m looking to publish information about our company to Wikipedia – after noting that other companies in our market segment have done the same. All information is going to be factual, but this is my first time posting on Wikipedia, so would appreciate any guidance. Have posted at my sandbox User:Bill-pr/sandboxBill-pr (talk) 22:08, 23 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Bill-pr, Wikipedia is not a place to advertise your company. Are you being paid for this? — Qwerfjkltalk 08:23, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That is exactly why I posted it to my sandbox, and not as a public page first. I am an employee of PublicRelay – but I am legitimately trying to inquire how do we put information about our firm up so that people seeking information can find out more about our firm, just like the other companies in our space. Based on a helpful reply by another Wikipedia person, I’ve been referred to Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion – and I’m now trying to understand more about the process. Bill-pr (talk) 10:34, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Bill-pr, it is very hard for someone with a conflict of interest to write a Wikipedia article that meets Wikipedia’s standards for neutrality. I note you didn’t answer my question – are you being paid for this, or are you doing so unofficially as an employee? — Qwerfjkltalk 18:25, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I am not being paid for this, I’m doing so unofficially as an employee. I’m trying to understand the process by which a company does get their name listed on Wikipedia. I’m reading the pages for other companies in our space and have a much better idea now of the neutral wording which is required, but are you able to tell me I’m prohibited from contributing this type of article or not? I really appreciate your guidance. Bill-pr (talk) 18:35, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Bill-pr, you are not prohibited, just make sure you follow WP:DISCLOSE. You can follow the advice at Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide#Advice, bullet point 4. — Qwerfjkltalk 19:14, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, will comply. Is it okay if I post to my sandbox page, to get a review, before attempting to make the actual page, so that I can get a review first? Bill-pr (talk) 11:12, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Bill-pr, it is more than okay, I would strongly advise you to do so. Of course, if the draft version is wholly promotional, it will be deleted as before. Qwerfjkltalk 12:58, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
that’s a good bit of infermation thoughtful thank you Qcoder1530 (talk) 12:25, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When is my page going to be published? —Ottawavalleyeditor73 (talk) 10:25, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I started my application about 2 months ago and just want to know if I still need to do something or if I am just waiting for direction. Thanks —Ottawavalleyeditor73 (talk) 10:30, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ottawavalleyeditor73, if you look at Draft:Kevin Holm or User talk:Ottawavalleyeditor73#Your submission at Articles for creation: Kevin Holm (August 23), you will see it was declined. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:31, 24 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

While investigating editintros, I’ve stumbled upon the page User:Qwerfjkl/Boteditintro. Example from Special:Diff/1318866030:

you can report it to my operator.

When clicking it either in the same tab or opening this URL in a new tab, I do not see the contents of User:Qwerfjkl/Boteditintro. I also checked logged out and in a different browser.

Did it break or am I doing something wrong? Courtesy ping to User:GoingBatty, who created the page.

Side note: User:Qwerfjkl/Botpreload seems to work fine. —andrybak (talk) 13:50, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Andrybak, to my recollection, it never worked. Any idea why? — Qwerfjkltalk 14:25, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

After poking the URL a bunch, I realized that there is a typo: the URL has User:Qwerfjkl/boteditintro instead of User:Qwerfjkl/Boteditintro with a captital “B”.
Tested: [4] – the editintro loaded, but it was overlapping the wikitext editor, making it hard to read and edit the wikitext. After removing the offending CSS, it is working as intended, as far as I can tell.
I have fixed the URL at User:Qwerfjkl (bot)/inform/bottom. Is there anything else to do? —andrybak (talk) 16:13, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Is there anything else to do? never mind, just a minute after the fix, the bot made an edit and I see the fixed URL there: Special:Diff/1318887999. —andrybak (talk) 16:18, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Side note: checked another thing with the CSS – it also didn’t look good in dark mode because of background-color:white;. —andrybak (talk) 16:45, 26 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thanks for your cleanup work. — Qwerfjkltalk 12:59, 27 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Comment/question:
The data is pulled from Wikidata

Basxto (talk) 20:46, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Basxto, yes, one of the references on Wikidata is missing a title. You can add a title to the reference on Wikidata to fix this. Qwerfjkltalk 21:13, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

They all had no title, I just added them.
Though for wikidata this should be a recurring problem independent to the edit on Wikipedia. I had to scroll up quite a bit to find some with a title.
Maybe it would be more helpful to print a different message that tells the user to add a title (P1476) to the reference URL on Wikidata? At least if you can detect that it is a linked to Wikidata object. Basxto (talk) 21:59, 29 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Basxto, only the latest version was used in the article, so that’s the only one that needs a title for the error to go away (although it is better if all the references on Wikidata have titles). The problem isn’t independent to the edit on Wikipedia, because you introduced content from Wikidata (and so it’s your responsibility to ensure it’s accurate).
Finally, with the way my bot works, it cannot detect which reference is causing the error, much less whether it originates from Wikidata, so it wouldn’t be possible to give a more informational message. Qwerfjkltalk 10:52, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The matter is clearly clarified. I need to earn 500 proper edits to be able to ask for help (submit COI edit requests) from other editors no associated with the subject. I am a bit apprehensive of what amounts to 500 edits, what rules apply, what is expected, will my purpose of making these edits to ultimately be able to submit a coi disqualifies me, or as long as i do contributive edits it is acceptable? —Kktr2025 (talk) 07:31, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Kktr2025, you can go to Wikipedia:Task Center, find something that looks manageable, and do 500 edits of that. If you try to game the system by making 500 test edits in a sandbox, the extended confirmed right would probably be removed. Per Wikipedia:Gaming the system#Gaming of permissions, so long as the edits aren’t test edits or trivial (like adding whitespace to the ends of paragraphs), this is legitimate, to my understanding. Although you can ask at the Teahouse thread and you may get more informed responses. — Qwerfjkltalk 10:48, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I don’t think i can ask in that teahouse thread, maybe make another thread. The message in that particular teahouse thread was clear … I cannot even discuss … ; The reason why I asked you is (one because wikipedia showed me you are my buddy) second I am 100% inclined to go proper decent edits … but rules are sometimes shocking and I don’t want to unknowingly fall into issues. I will come back and ask doubts if I have. Let me try what you said and see. But one more thing, how to check how many edits I have done, means proper ones … what really counts? Is there a wiki automation/plugin/template to tell that which i can add to my talk page or profile? Kktr2025 (talk) 15:01, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the trouble. But would appreciate a review feedback. Actually I did a first edit using visual editor – System file (Diff 1319564259) – does this count as a valid contribution or it is too low level to count? I basically went to the list of articles lacking citation and chose this and added the best citations i could find on the topic. Kktr2025 (talk) 15:49, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kktr2025, you can find your edit count at Special:Contributions/Kktr2025 (there is a link to contributions in the dropdown menu at the top right of the page).
The edit you made has a few minor problems, but it is a reasonable edit, and definitely a net improvement to Wikipedia. The minor issues are that using “(emphasis mine)” in quotation should be avoided – probably the emphasis isn’t needed at all, and also Wikipedia articles are written from a impersonal perspective, so “mine” shouldn’t be used. Also the article has the tag {{Unreferenced}}, which is no longer true because you added a reference; you can remove it and replace it with {{More citations needed}}.
But these are just improvements to your edit; your edit itself was fine, Qwerfjkltalk 21:22, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

thank you so much for the detailed support Kktr2025 (talk) 06:24, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand the reference was to a patent, and surely not the best …. but I couldn’t find anything better Graphical user interface builder (Diff 1319676350) I am not sure why it got reported a vandalism. Is it because i referenced french wikipedia page? Kktr2025 (talk) 06:56, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Kktr2025, it was reverted by the automated anti-vandalism bot – it doesn’t always revert correctly. You can just redo the edit and the bot won’t revert it again.
That said, I’m not sure the reference was good in this case – you appear to be trying to support the statement in the article that a graphical user interface builder is also called a GUI builder, but the reference makes no mention of GUI builder as far as I can tell. If you can’t find a good reference, you can just leave the article, or try to find a source for something else in the article. Qwerfjkltalk 08:15, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

ok … i just left it. thank you so much for your help and guidance. I feel much more confident now … I think over 1-2 months i should be able to make 500 proper/decent contributions. Kktr2025 (talk) 08:48, 31 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
How do I add images?
I want to add images I took of a Greater Antillean Grackle in the Dominican Republic to the gallery, but I have no clue how to add my own media/naming conventions.
Thank you! —RotKid (talk) 17:48, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@RotKid, go to Wikipedia:File upload wizard and the steps to upload a file should be obvious from there (you can ask me if you need additional help). The important thing to note is that you will need to license your images freely, meaning that anyone else will be able to reuse them, even outside of Wikipedia, even for commercial purposes. You can find further information on this at Wikipedia:Image use policy. At Wikipedia:Image use policy#Image titles and file names, there is some advice on how to name the file.
In terms of using that image in the gallery, it should be fairly easy with the visual editor (which is used by deafult) – just edit the page, select the gallery, choose edit, and then +Add new image. Qwerfjkltalk 21:30, 30 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on A Jolly Good Fellow (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is:

  • a disambiguation page with a title ending in “(disambiguation)” which lists only one extant Wikipedia page (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • a disambiguation page that lists zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • a redirect with a title ending in “(disambiguation)” whose target is neither a disambiguation page nor page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 09:22, 1 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I may go on and start editing in earnest in the future, but right now I’m interested in writing some practice articles on the sandbox. I’m a bit intimidated at the moment as I’m just starting out. Do you have any tips for creating/editing templates in the sandbox? —Slighm1780 (talk) 03:42, 2 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Slighm1780, Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing seven million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read Help:Your first article. If you haven’t already also check out the tutorial; it’s a lot of fun! MediaWiki message delivery 19:31, 3 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Qwerfjkl!

Some time ago you activated your bot on our homewiki (SqWiki) to handle citation errors, and it’s been working great ever since. Recently, while fixing some lint errors, I came across your bot’s name again on WP:LINT and thought I’d reach out.

Would you be able to help us — either through your bot or your own experience — with cleaning up some of our lint errors? At least the high priority ones (around 35 in total currently, not counting Duplicate IDs). We have around 150K in total, everything included, but for many years now I’ve mostly been tackling them alone, except for a few rare occasions when editors from EnWiki stepped in — and ironically, their contributions made the biggest difference.

Or maybe you could point me toward another wikignome who might be willing to help? – Klein Muçi (talk) 14:26, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Klein Muçi, @Jonesey95 is much more experienced at fixing linter errors than me; I suggest you ask them. — Qwerfjkltalk 15:00, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Jonesey95 is one of the few EnWiki users I mentioned above who has already helped us solve quite some problems already (the others being WOSlinker and Malnadach). I was hoping not to disturb any of the said users any further. Haha! But maybe I can get some help in just emptying the high priority list. Nonetheless, thank you again! 🙂 – Klein Muçi (talk) 16:22, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed a few high-priority errors for you. I recommend ignoring the duplicate IDs and the dark mode issues unless there are a lot of people who are interested in using and fixing dark mode on sq.WP. I didn’t see many bot-fixable patterns among the high- and medium-priority errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:57, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonesey95, thank you very much! Would you mind just solving the remaining 3 bogus options errors? I’ve been unable to fix those 2 related to the country data template for quite some years now, funny as it may seem. – Klein Muçi (talk) 23:21, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I fixed the flag templates by adding borders by default to the naval flags. I don’t know if that is what editors want, but it fixes the Linter errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:49, 5 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Flag/Map templates will need to get updated on us anyway. Thank you again! – Klein Muçi (talk) 01:05, 5 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
