Hello, Aiden (the guy who reverted your MOS:NICKCRUFT edits last time) here

I was on the talk page for Lee Kuan Yew, asking whether I should add his pinyin to the name efn as with a lot of Chinese politicians in Singapore when I recalled that you deleted a number of pinyin

I’ve already deleted a few dialect romanisations (my contribs) (practically no one here speaks it in daily life anymore) in favour of pinyin

If you’d like to re-add them, please retain the pinyin; George Goh is an example of having both kinds of romanisations (yes, you added the pinyin later, ik)

oh yeah sure thanks for teling me

personally, when it comes to people who have names in non-mandarin sinitic languages, i’m in favour of using the romanisations of those languages over pinyin. to me, substituting these with pinyin would be like replacing the irish phonetic transcriptions of place names in ireland with anglicised versions, because “no one speaks irish in daily life anymore”. regardless of the current state of non-mandarin languages in singapore, i believe that as the historical native languages of most chinese singaporeans, they should be retained in romanisation as per WP:EN. (also i’m chinese singaporean too lol i know what the language situation here is like)

but yeah nowadays i’d put the non-mandarin romanisations first, then pinyin second. i’ve actually been meaning to go back through the 15th parliament and re-add the pinyin at some point but i’ve been procrastinating lmao

tbh does it really matter if he’s of hokkien descent? he has a pretty obviously hokkien name, even if he was teochew or cantonese his name would still be hokkien, which would still be romanised in POJ

yeah so isn’t that what the POJ is for in the first place then? to show unfamiliar readers which sinitic language a name is written in, as well as providing a systematic guide to pronunciation (singaporean ad-hoc romanisation is terrible)
