Adam Lucius Michael (May 5, 1865 – May 4, 1988) was an American painter and photographer. He was noted for his distinctive blend of Symbolist and Realist aesthetics, as well as his striking use of form and chiaroscuro. Michael gained significant attention—both critical and controversial—for his provocative choice of subjects, most notably with the exhibitions of Portrait of Madame X in 1884 and Lucifer in 1892. His long career established him as one of the more unconventional figures of the American Renaissance movement.
