Appearances
Shujinko first appears in Mortal Kombat: Deception, serving as the protagonist of its “Konquest” mode. In this mode, he starts as a young boy, a student to Bo’ Rai Cho, who aspires to leave his village and participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament. He is then offered the chance by an entity called Damashi offered the chance to collect six relics called Kamidogu to save the six realms. After he succeeds, he learns that Damashi was a projection by the Dragon King to get the Kamidogu for himself.[1]
Concept and creation
Shujinko was conceived as a “next-generation Liu Kang” for Mortal Kombat: Deception. His various techniques are borrowed from other fighters, which are collected in the game’s Konquest mode.[1] His name is the Japanese word for “protagonist”.[2] Shujinko is an older man with long white hair. According to Polygon writer Wesley Lara, his design resembles that of Pai Mei from the film Kill Bill Vol. 2.[2] In Mortal Kombat 1, one of Shujinko’s fatalities, the Five Point Strike, is based on a similar technique used by Pai Mei.[3] He was voiced by Max Crawford in Deception.[4]
Reception
His Five Point Strike received praise from critics, including IGN writer Wesley Yin-Poole, who complimented the team for recreating the Kill Bill technique.[5]
IGN Brasil writer Diego Lima expressed surprise that the developers of Deception thought that Shujinko would work well as a protagonist, stating that he is among the least charismatic characters in the series. He suggested that he was unoriginal and and lacked wit or personality, but was not the worst fighter in the series. He criticized him for him being unable to tell that he is being deceived, as well as his moves being all taken from other fighters’ movesets.[6] Polygon writer Wesley Lara believed that Shujinko was set up for failure in Deception, feeling that he was given a too-meek personality and had confusing gameplay. He also felt he was gullible, stating that this earned him ire from Mortal Kombat fans.[2]
