Cognitive Predictive Theory (CPT) is a psychological framework proposed by David R. Blunt in 2025.[1]
The theory suggests that the mind’s primary function is to anticipate future events and emotional responses through continuous mental simulations, rather than simply reacting to present stimuli.
A later edition expands the framework to applications in artificial intelligence, describing CPT as a model for human‑like forecasting.[2]
CPT was introduced by David R. Blunt in 2025 through two published volumes. The first book (800 pages, 7×10 format) outlines the theory’s core claim that cognition is primarily predictive, while the second volume (500 pages, 7×10 format) extends the framework to artificial intelligence applications.
Distinction from predictive coding

CPT has no relationship to predictive coding (PC). Predictive coding is a neuroscience model focused on minimizing sensory prediction errors through hierarchical neural processing, whereas CPT is a psychological framework emphasizing proactive mental simulations of future events, emotions, and behaviors. The two share a thematic emphasis on prediction but operate at different levels of explanation (neural vs. psychological).
