- The Late Gothic appearance of the church of St. Martin in Oestrich was destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War and restored only in 1894. (2024)
- The first stanza of the hymn “Nun bitten wir den Heiligen Geist“, asking the Holy Spirit for the right faith most of all, is documented in German in the 13th century, and the later three by Martin Luther relate to faith, love and hope. (2011)
- Two conductors shared performances of Verdi‘s Messa da Requiem in St. Martin, Idstein. (2010)
- Paul Gerhardt‘s song of thanks and praise “Nun danket all und bringet Ehr”
was first published along with 17 of his other hymns in 1647, during the Thirty Years’ War. (2018) - Rabbi Michael Robinson and 15 other Reform rabbis were arrested and jailed after answering Martin Luther King’s call to stand with him for civil rights in St. Augustine, Florida. (2018)
- On 27 October 1726, J. S. Bach led the first performance of Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen, BWV 56
, one of few works he called a cantata. - Arvo Pärt composed the motet The Deer’s Cry on a commission from Louth, Ireland, setting the conclusion of Saint Patrick’s Breastplate, “Christ with me”. (2018)
- Bishop Franz Kamphaus opposed the Pope John Paul II, “convinced that our way of counselling women would save the lives of many more children”. (2014)
- Franz Grundheber
performed the title role in Alban Berg’s Wozzeck in Paris and Berlin, staged by Patrice Chéreau and filmed in 1994. (2014) - Béatrice Uria-Monzon,
in the title role of Bizet’s Carmen, preferred a “meditative” and “dreamy” performance over a “sexy” one. - The 1966 production of Handke’s Offending the Audience, directed by Claus Peymann at the Theater am Turm, has been described as “the beginning of modern theatre”.
- While in exile in Paris, the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis worked with the Chilean ambassador and poet Pablo Neruda on Canto General.
- Bach
used music of thanks from his cantata Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir, BWV 29 , for his final Dona nobis pacem (Grant us peace). (2015)
