Law Enforcement and Security Training Career
[edit]
Smith began developing defensive tactics curricula for criminal justice professionals in the late 1990s. In 1998, he founded Strategic Self-Defense and Gunfighting Tactics (SSGT), which later became a mandated or approved component of law-enforcement training programs in multiple states.
In 2003, SSGT defensive tactics instruction became a required component of basic training curricula for all state and regional law-enforcement academies in Alabama under the Alabama Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission. Smith was certified as a Specialized Instructor by the same commission that year.
Smith has held instructor certifications from multiple state training authorities, including the Mississippi Peace Officers’ Standards and Training Commission and the Alaska Police Standards Council. He has also served as an adjunct instructor at the Regional Counterdrug Training Academy in Meridian, Mississippi.
In 2014, Alabama police academies were required to deliver a standardized number of training hours using Smith’s Vanguard defensive tactics programs. Smith has also developed defensive tactics programs for private-sector security organizations, including a corporate security training program for The Home Depot.
In 2020, Smith was retained by a national law firm as an expert consultant on use-of-force matters. He has served as an expert witness in use-of-force cases in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
In 2024, Smith was retained by the Tennessee Corrections Institute to develop a statewide defensive tactics program for correctional officers.
Vanguard Defensive Tactics Programs
[edit]
Smith developed the Vanguard Level One and Vanguard Level Two defensive tactics programs as instructor-level curricula for law-enforcement training environments. The programs are designed to provide structured technique selection, instructional sequencing, and standardized presentation methods for academy and in-service training.
The Vanguard programs are taught through certified instructor courses and are used by law-enforcement agencies and academies across multiple U.S. states.
