The Fatah–Hamas conflict escalated during the Gaza war following Israel’s support for Fatah-affiliated clans within the Gaza Strip.[7]
Timeline
2024
March 2024
Hamas accused Fatah of sending members into Northern Gaza in collaboration with Israel, saying it had arrested six individuals. The Palestinian Authority denied Hamas’ claim.[8]
2025
July 2025
Ynet reported that the Fatah-affiliated Khalas clan, led by Rami Khalas, was operating in Shuja’iyya and receiving Israeli protection and operational cover.[7] This was later denied by the Khalas clan.[9]
April 2025
The Khalas clan allegedly participated in the 2025 Shuja’iyya offensive against Hamas.[3][10][11][12] However, the clan has denied any support from Israel.[9]
August 2025
Hamas operatives allegedly shot and wounded a member of the al-Mujaida clan in Khan Yunis, who later died.[7]
September 2025
Al-Mujaida clan members killed two members of the Al-Qassam Brigades and seized their weapons. The clan refused to hand over the suspects to Hamas.[7]
October 2025
On 3 October, clashes within Khan Yunis erupted between the Hamas-affiliated Arrow Unit and the al-Mujaida clan. Hamas stated it launched the raid to detain alleged collaborators with Israel. Hamas reportedly killed 5 of the clan’s members, and clan members reportedly killed 11 of Hamas’ members.[13] The CSF said they fought Hamas alongside clan members, with air support from the Israeli Air Force.[14]
Following the Gaza Peace Plan and ceasefire, the Fatah-aligned Khalas clan seized parts of the Shuja’iyya neighborhood. The Khalas clan operate in areas occupied by Israel but it is unclear if they are backed by Israel.[15] A few months ago Rami Khalas and Ahmed Jundeya, a member of another large Shuja’iyya clan, formed a group that opposes Hamas.[16][17]
Hamas attacked members of the Khalas clan while they were retreating after the Gaza Peace Plan and ceasefire.[18]
