This year, two main lines of work have been carried out: the [[:en:Public University of Navarre| Public University of Navarre (UPNA)]] and the project History of the Basque Country in 100 objects. But along with these, we have also developed other initiatives.

As a result of the collaboration agreement signed with the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) in 2024, as initiated in the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year, we made new contributions in 2025. In total, training sessions have been held in 8 subjects of different faculties and degrees, in which 210 students have participated, working on 59 articles.

In 100 objects of the history of Euskal Herria 16 of them are in Navarre. Of these, 9 are located in 3 museums that are the responsibility of the Government of Navarre and despite the obstacles we have encountered, we have obtained permission to work with each of them. We have visited the Ethnological Museum of Navarre and the Museum of Carlism, obtaining the necessary images and information. In the case of the Museum of Navarre, due to the rehabilitation works of the building, it was closed in 2025 and we have not been able to advance much. The rest of the objects are not in museums and we have had to work on the ground to obtain information. Among them are: Hermitage of Legarda, Sanctuary of Aralar, Archaeological Center of Amaiur, Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles,…

2025 Grant report to the Basque Government (in Basque).

In 2025, the Basque Wikimedians User Group has continued to carry out initiatives along the same lines devised in previous years.
It has continued to expand the Educational Program and has given a major boost to the video creation project, to the increase in the number of female biographies, and to the 1,000 articles that all Wikipedias must have. It has also promoted a number of other projects outside the educational program. There is now a summary of the activities during the year. You can also check the version in Basque of this report.

General Assembly 2025

[edit]

On January 25th, we held the 2025 General Assembly of the Association. It was held in Eibar, at the Markesku Palace of the Basque Summer University (UEU). The agenda was followed by a presentation of what was done in 2024, the annual balance sheet and the budgets for 2025 were approved.

An extraordinary assembly was also held. It was decided to modify the statutes of the association to accommodate a new type of partner, it was decided to create a figure called collaborating partner: the collaborating partner is the person who wants to help the group but does not edit Wikipedia. Besisdes, it was decided to take steps to obtain special legal recognition for the association, it was approved to start the process of being a “public utility association”.

The minutes are published here:

2025 Workshop of Basque Wikimedians

[edit]

In addition to the EWKE Association Assembly, we organized for the first time a Full Day Program: workshops, conferences and the opportunity to share experiences and to be together.

Workshop of Basque Wikimedians in Eibar

2025 was the second year of the 2024-2027 strategy. This strategy has set a number of objectives for 2027 and defined a set of indicators to achieve them. At the 2025 rate, we are exceeding them at a good pace.

  • 500,000 articles in the Basque Wikipedia: we should have created 37,000 new articles since 2024 and 52.404 have been created.
    • Women’s biographies have grown considerably
    • Thanks to the work done, the Basque language has won two places among the Wikipedias with most articles since January 2024, and Basque Wikipedia is already the 32nd largest one.
  • The list of 1,000 articles that all Wikipedias should contain: At the beginning of 2024, we were in 18th place and finished 2025 in 1th place. 100% of the articles now exceed 30,000 bytes.
  • As for the expanded 10,000 article list that all Wikipedias should contain: We went up a position in the ranking. The goal was to go any position the ranking, but this year it was not been possible, without being able to reach the Czech. However, we are still one of the Wikipedians with all the articles.
  • Women’s presence on Wikipedia: 30,000 female articles by 2027, one third of all biographies. At the beginning of 2024, the biographies of women were 17,175, and those of men were 44,912. By the end of the year, there were 28.500 women (34.99 per cent) and 56,077 men. Behind these results is especially the work of WikiEmakumeok. They meet weekly in Oiartzun and Durango. One of the objectives of the Basque Wikimedians User Group is to foster and promote these groups by helping the creation of similar groups when help is requested.
  • Txikipedia corpus: The objective for 2025 was to create 900 articles during the year, reaching 7500 in total. We added 1.483 articles in 2025 and, at the end, 9,120 articles were created.
  • Deepening the knowledge of the Basque Country:
    • Improvement of the municipalities of the Basque Country. The electoral information by municipality has been extracted to another article.
    • The demographic data of the municipalities of the Basque Country now are automatically taken from Wikidata.
    • To automatically display these demographic data, historical census data have been uploaded to Wikidata, including those produced by Basque official services like Eustat and Nastat, as well as those collected by the Spanish INE between 1900 and 1991. Thus,it has placed among the best in the world the demographic information in Wikidata about the municipalities of South Basque Country.
    • We have created semi-automated population maps that will be dynamically renewed as the census is renewed.
    • Considering articles about the Basque Country, there are many more articles geolocated on Wikipedia in Basque than in Spanish ad French Wikipedias.

In the field of education, projects have been carried out in several areas.

  • At the university-level, the Education Program has been present in 38 differents subjects, and 725 students have participated. At least 350 articles have been created, and more than 3,100,000 characters (about 450,000 words) have been added. The topics have been varied: Paralympic sports, history, philosophy, artificial intelligence, computer science, biology, biochemistry…
  • In Secondary Education, the objectives have been the use of learning situations, the use of Ikusgela videos and the promotion of Txikipedia. We have collaborated with 24 ikastolas of the Federation of Ikastolas, as well as with Oteitza Lizeo Politeknikoa, Herrikide of Tolosa, Lizeo Santo Tomas and in Lapurdi. On the other hand, the Erasmus+ project is now finished and our goal iss to follow collaborating with the BHI Zumaia institute and, if possible, also with Geoparkea.
  • Wikikasi: learning situations

With the collaboration of Talaios Cooperative we have already published six learning situations, two for 1st and 2nd level in Secondary Education and the remaining four projects for the second cycle. Talaios Kooperatiba and Badalab presented the learning situation “Digital Challenges” at the Durango Fair.

Txikipedia (WikiChildren)

[edit]

As of December 2025, the Txikipedia project had about 9,000 articles. Last summer, the campaign “Edit Txikipedia” was launched and about 320 articles were edited. This corrective action will continue in the coming years.

The development of Txikipedia has continued during 2025 with the collaboration of different schools. Around 24 ikastolas have taken part in the project, pushing for the creation of around 250 articles.

The Public school of Zumaia has reached 1,500 Txikipedia articles in this course; approximately one in six items in total in Txikipedia. In collaboration with the Pagoeta Natural Park, the students of 1st Baccalaureate have worked on plant blindness and have made articles on threatened plants in the Basque Country, as well as illustrations. in 2026 this learning situation will be carried out with the Soinuenea Foundation. Besides, also other schools in the area of Zumaia have contributed to Txikipedia.

Contributions to Txikipedia have also been made in other public centers, such as the IES Julio Caro Baroja in Getxo.

This year, two main lines of work have been carried out: the Public University of Navarre (UPNA) and the project History of the Basque Country in 100 objects. But along with these, we have also developed other initiatives.

WikiEmakumeok (WikiWomen)

[edit]

The Basque Wikimedians User Group has given its support to the different WikiEmakumeok groups that are being created. This support has been twofold: groups have received support for their project and technical support when needed. Moreover the user group has also supported the project of illustrating women portraits (check the Commons category). Similarly, during 2024, the 30.000 women project has been created, which has the aim of reaching 30,000 biographies of women, encompassing 33% of all biographies in the Basque Wikipedia by 2027.

The history of the Basque Country in 100 objects

[edit]

A list of 100 objects has been collected in collaboration with existing museums in the Basque Country. The aim of the list is to describe the history of the Basque Country through these objects, starting from the Palaeolithic to the contemporary world. This is an idea inspired from the project “A History of the World in 100 Objects”, co-produced in 2010 by BBC 4 Radio and the British Museum.

In collaboration with EHGAM members, a project has been launched to develop a Style Guide to ensure that Wikipedia articles in Basque are appropriate or correct from an LGBTI+ perspective.

Communication in social media

[edit]

Six/seven different posts (toots, posts…) have been released in social media every day through Social Media (Twitter/X, Mastodon and Faceebook). The purpose has been twofold: to show and put into value the existing content in Basque Wikipedia and to increase the presence of Basque language in social media.

Content related to the 2024 Paris Olympics was updated and several articles were created regarding sports and athletes.

One on the activities outlined in our 2024 annual plan was to work on the sport content in the Basque Wikipedia as part of the WikiLovesOlympics initiative. Two main actions were carried out. First, with the help of students from the University of the Basque Country, articles on sports at the Olympic Games were improved, and secondly, a contest was set to include results from the Olympics and to improve the biographies of athletes (a similar initiative was done with Tokyo 2020 Summer and Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics). Basque Wikipedia was the second Wikipedia in achieving the completion of all results of the Olympics. You can find more details in the Basque Wikipedia Wikikproject Olympics page.

Data upload of more than 1000 more music records to Wikidata

[edit]

This project, which began in 2023 and ended in 2024, has enriched Wikidata with content related to Basque music. At the end of the project, records of 300 Basque performers and 1144 albums were added to Wikidata. These 300 performers/music bands are the creators with the most production. In February, the Basque Wikimedians User Group website (wikimedia.eus) also presented 10 different visualizations to better understand the state of Basque music along with the technical specifications of the work carried out. You can also check the interview in the Elhuyar magazine to one of the participants in the proyect.

‘’Begoñako errepublika’’

[edit]

In the article of the former municipality of Begoñako errepublika (Republic of Begoña), now a district of Bilbao, the content related several aspects (history, geography, demography…) has been created or improved, and we have also created articles of 100 famous people from there (check the full list) as well as including their data in Wikidata. Finally, more than 200 photos on the topic have been uploaded to Commons (check the category)

Three competitions have been held this year:

  • Basque culture: To start the new season of Ikusgela, a competition was held for improving articles Basque culture. It also hade some impact in Basque media.
  • Short Biographies: Although all the articles present on the list of 10,000 articles all Wikipedias should have are already created in the Basque Wikipedia, several of them are very short. We focused on short biographies to assemble the list of articles to be improved and the contest obtained excellent results.
  • Important and short: Based again on the list of 10,000 articles that all Wikipedias should have, the shortest 600 articles were identified and the contest was centred in improving them.
  • The Euskera Wikipedia Cover has been improved.
  • Contributions to Wikifunctions.
  • Contributions to the VideoWiki project.
