Release and composition
Following the release of his 2019 collaboration “Ritual” with Jonas Blue and Rita Ora, Tiësto returned with “God Is a Dancer”, another vocal-driven single coming shortly after the release of Mabel’s debut studio album High Expectations, which had earned her widespread recognition.[1]
“God Is a Dancer” was issued for digital download and streaming by Musical Freedom, under exclusive license to PM:AM Recordings, a division of Universal International Music, on 20 September 2019, and was subsequently included on Tiësto’s 2020 album The London Sessions and as a bonus track on the final digital reissue of Mabel’s 2019 debut album High Expectations.[2][3][4][5] An acoustic version of the song was released in various countries for digital download and streaming by Musical Freedom under exclusive license to PM:AM Recordings on 25 October 2019, and features a distinct cover artwork.[6]
“God Is a Dancer” was written by Tiësto (Tijs Verwest), Josh Wilkinson, and Violet Skies, with production handled by the first two.[7] Running at two minutes and 48 seconds, it is a dance-pop song that incorporates elements of pop music.[3][8][9] Discussing the release, Tiësto described it as “a great feel-good dance song” that he was eager to share “with the dance floors and festival crowds around the world”, and praised Mabel as “an incredible talent” who “smashed the vocal”, adding that he could not think of “anyone else more perfect to have collaborated with on this record”.[1]
Chris Stack of Dancing Astronaut described the song as “a slice of modern pop mixed with a touch of house rhythm”, noting that it positioned Tiësto closer to the contemporary pop landscape.[8] He highlighted the track’s “bubbly melody mimicking a Trinidadian soca rhythm” and commented that Mabel’s vocals “resonate effectively alongside the track’s Island swing”, complementing her “grooving cadence”.[8] Similarly, Cameron Sunkel of EDM.com observed that the collaboration “sees Mabel’s vocals taking the spotlight”, while praising the “inviting club groove laid down by [Tiësto]”.[1]
In Mabel’s home country, the United Kingdom, the single debuted at number 37 on the Official Singles Chart and later climbed to number 15 on the chart dated 18 October 2019.[10][11] “God Is a Dancer” earned a silver certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in under three months, before achieving platinum status in 2024 for combined sales and streaming figures exceeding 600,000 units.[12] In Tiësto’s home country, the Netherlands, the track spent 16 weeks on both the Dutch Single Top 100 and Dutch Top 40 charts, peaking at number 16 on the latter one.[13][14] The song also peaked at number 9 on the Scottish Singles Sales Chart and number 25 in Ireland.[15][16] The song was certified platinum in 2021 by the Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry (ZPAV) for generating revenue of 50,000 zł or more,[17] alongside a further platinum certification earned in Brazil during 2024.[18] In the United States, “God Is a Dancer” debuted at number 20 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart dated 5 October 2019, registering 1,000 downloads and 1.3 million streams during the week of 20–26 September 2019.[19] In December 2019, the song reached number 13 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and topped the Dance Club Songs ranking, marking the first chart-topper for both Tiësto and Mabel on that listing.[20][21]
The accompanying music video premiered on Tiësto’s YouTube channel on 20 September 2019.[22] Set in an industrial warehouse, it features Mabel performing choreography alongside a group of dancers, blending fashion-forward styling with visual motifs reminiscent of classic dance-oriented music videos, showcasing scaffolds and a variety of lighting effects, such as a lighted podium.[8][9] A lyric video followed on 18 October 2019, while Mabel released a performance video through Tiësto’s YouTube channel on 12 November 2019.[23][24] Mabel appeared with Tiësto on episode nine of The Jonathan Ross Show, broadcast on ITV on 9 November 2019.[25] That same year, she performed the track for Hits Radio, and at Capital‘s Jingle Bell Ball 2019.[26][27] She later revisited the song at Capital Up Close 2021, performing it alongside her 2020 single “West Ten“.[28]
