FAOTSA 2025 — Wikipedia sprint session

This page is intended for coordinating the FAOTSA 2025 workshop “Wikipedia sprint session”

Preparation before FAOTSA 2025

  • (optional) create a Wikipedia account
  • (optional) Identify pages that require polish.
  • (optional) Identify pages that need to be created.

Participation in the Wikipedia sprint

To be able to participate, attendees of FAOTSA2025 will need the following:

  • The willingness to learn.
  • The willingness to have fun.
  • Access to a small team with a wifi capable laptop that can run a modern browser. Collaboration in small teams of two to four people is very strongly encouraged. Not everyone needs to be in the drivers’ seat. (See Pair programming, Team programming)
  • Rabbitholing is strongly encouraged.
  • Keep a log of what you are doing/learning/planning during the sprint.
  • Do not try to finish a page during the sprint. Make a plan. Make a draft. Get to know the topic. Delegate small tasks. Gain momentum. You can always finish later.

Starting out editing Wikipedia

  • Do not be afraid to make mistakes.

Suggestions for your first small contributions

  • Creating a new page: Start small. You do not need to create the whole page all at once.

  • Add useful citations.
  • New pages are reviewed by experinced Wikipedians.
  • Follow the advice of experienced Wikipedians. They are there to help.
  • Don’t feel bad if your page is tagged for “speedy deletion

Useful tips

  • Use browser that has a builtin AI copilot (Microsoft Edge).
  • Ask the AI: “How do I do XYZ on Wikipedia”
