Brookside is a British television soap opera. It was first broadcast on 2 November 1982 and aired on Channel 4. The following is a list of characters that appeared in the show in 1988, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by the show’s creator and executive producer Phil Redmond. The 1988 season of Brookside began airing from 4 January 1988.
Kathy Roach, played by Noreen Kershaw, made her first appearance on 22 February 1988.[1] Kershaw made her final appearance as Kathy during the episode broadcast on 19 October 1990.[2]
Kathy leaves her husband and home to be with her lover, Jimmy Corkhill (Dean Sullivan]). She arrives at what she believes to be Jimmy’s new home after he leaves his wife, Jackie. She soon discovers that the house belongs to Jimmy’s brother, Billy Corkhill (John McArdle) and his family. Billy agrees to let Jimmy and Kathy stay on a temporary basis. Kathy begins to cook and clean for the Corkhills to prolong their stay. Kathy manages to convince Billy to let Tracy’s boyfriend, Jamie Henderson (Sean McKee) stay too. The house becomes overcrowded and Jimmy convinces Billy to let him convert his garage into an extension for him and Kathy to live in. Sheila Grant (Sue Johnston) gets into an argument with Billy and she brings up Kathy staying in his house. Jimmy tells Kathy about Sheila’s comments and she goes over to Sheila’s house looking for an argument. Kathy recognises Sheila as her childhood friend and they immediately reconnect. Kathy begins to feel uncomfortable living at the Corkhills because of Billy’s moods. She asks Jimmy to complete the conversation of the garage quicker. Jimmy completes the conversion and Kathy begins to make it her home. Jimmy fails to tell Kathy that Jackie’s father has died and tries to sneak off to his funeral. Kathy realises that Jimmy is leaving her to reunite with Jackie and she packs his things. Kathy gets ready to move out of the Corkhill’s but Tracy and Billy ask her to stay.
Jimmy returns and tells Kathy he will give her money once Jackie inherits her father’s estate. He asks Kathy to place a bet for him which causes an argument and she throws him out. Sheila witnesses this and supports Kathy. They plan an evening out clubbing which causes trouble with Sheila’s husband, Bobby Grant (Ricky Tomlinson). They go out and meet two men, Stephen (Steve Halliwell) and Greg (Ian Liston), Kathy gets them to buy them drinks and pretends their husbands are working away on an oil rig. Kathy reveals where she lives and they follow them home and cause a disturbance on Brookside Close. Bobby, already annoyed that Sheila has stayed out with Kathy late attacks Stephen and Greg, before slapping Sheila.
Cheryl Boyanowsky, played by Jennifer Calvert, made her first appearance on 22 March 1988.[3] She made her final appearance as Cheryl during the episode broadcast on 11 December 1989.[4]
Cheryl is a friend of Donna Gibson (Dianne Michaels) and the two spend time on a skiing holiday in Austria during their travels around Europe. Donna meets Terry Sullivan (Brian Regan) and they arrange an afternoon skiing, accompanied by Cheryl and Terry’s friend, Jonathan Gordon-Davies (Steven Pinner). Cheryl is not impressed with Donna trying to set her up on a date with Jonathan but goes along. She talks to Jonathan and they begin to get along. Cheryl goes to Jonathan’s room to play backgammon and drink wine. Jonathan reveals the circumstances of his wife, Laura Wright (Jane Cunliffe) after she was electrocuted and fell down the stairs. He states that he wished Laura dead when he discovered she would never recover from her injuries. Cheryl tells Jonathan not to feel guilty because he did not want Laura to suffer. Cheryl reveals that her brother died when they went sailing together during a storm. She adds that he remained calm but she panicked and fell in the water. He died trying to save Cheryl and she blames herself. They begin to bond over their grief and spend the remainder of their holiday together. Cheryl and Donna travel to Liverpool to stay with Jonathan and Terry.
