| San Francisco’s at-large City Council district |
|
|---|---|
San Francisco’s at-large supervisorial district was a city and county electoral district in the city and county of San Francisco. Existing from 1900 to 1978 and again from 1981 to 2000, it served as the primary method of electing supervisors in the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, with the procedures of elections varying over time.
In 1977 voters approved Proposition T, replacing the at‑large system with 11 single‑member districts. After Supervisor Harvey Milk was assassinated by former Supervisor Dan White, the city returned to at‑large elections. Following later efforts to restore districts, the district system was reinstated in 2000, ending the at‑large system. Subsequent proposals to revive the at‑large or hybrid systems have been made but have not been implemented.
