New York-based music rights and entertainment company
Influence Media Partners is an American music rights and entertainment company founded in 2018. The company invests in and actively manages music publishing, recorded music, and name, image, and likeness rights through funds created in partnership with BlackRock and Warner Music Group. Influence’s current portfolio includes catalog and future works from artists, songwriters, and producers such as Future, Enrique Inglesias, Blake Shelton, DJ Khaled, Tainy, and Julia Michaels.
Headquartered in New York City, Influence Media Partners also operates SLANG, its record label and music publishing division, which distributes music from artists including Will Smith, Lil Durk, 30 Roc, and The Underachievers.
Founding and first acquisitions (2018–2022)
[edit]
Influence Media Partners was founded in 2018 by Lylette Pizarro, a former partner at creative agency RPM GRP, and Lynn Hazan, former chief financial officer and general manager at Epic Records. They were joined by founding advisors Rene McLean, founder and former partner at RPM GRP, and film producer and media investor Jon Jashni.[1][2]
In 2018, Influence secured bridge financing from Morgan Stanley to acquire select copyrights from the music publishing catalogs of songwriters and producers Jeff Bhasker, Shane McAnally, and Ben Rector.[3][4][5] In December 2019, Influence sold these assets to Tempo Music Investments, an investment platform launched by Warner Music Group and Providence Equity Partners with $650 million in initial capital.[1][2]
In March 2021, Influence created its first investment fund, Fund I, backed with $100 million from the Municipal Employees’ Retirement System of Michigan.[2] The fund focused on acquiring catalogs from female artists and songwriters. The following month, Influence acquired select copyrights from the catalog of Ali Tamposi, including her stakes in “Let Me Love You” by Justin Bieber, “Havana” by Camila Cabello, and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” by Kelly Clarkson.[6]
Partnerships and Fund II portfolio expansion (2022–2024)
[edit]
In February 2022, Influence partnered with Warner Music Group and BlackRock‘s Alternative Investors unit to create a $750 million fund aimed at acquiring and actively managing contemporary catalogs, with an emphasis on female and diverse songwriters and producers that will retain a stake in their work after acquisition.[4][5][7][8] At the time of Fund II’s announcement, the partnership had deployed $300 million to acquire 20 catalogs, including works from Jessie Reyez, Skyler Stonestreet, and The Stereotypes.[9] The fund also acquired the 2005-2021 catalog of Puerto Rican producer Tainy, an eight-figure deal according to Billboard, which included his stakes in songs such as “I Like It” by Cardi B and “Telepatia” by Kali Uchis.[10]
The following September, Influence acquired Future‘s publishing catalog from 2004 to 2020, encompassing 612 songs. The catalog included his solo hits such as “Mask Off,” collaborations with Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, and The Weeknd, and eight albums that reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.[11] According to Variety, the deal was valued in the “high eight figures.”[12][13]
In October 2022, Influence acquired Blake Shelton‘s catalog from 2001 to 2019 and established a joint venture with the artist to promote and monetize his recordings, while allowing him to retain partial ownership and continue earning royalties post-sale. Under the agreement, which includes 10 studio albums, a Christmas album and two EPs, Warner Music Group continues to distribute Shelton’s catalog and Sony Music Publishing remains his publisher.[5][14][15] According to The Wall Street Journal, Influence has never taken a 100 percent stake in any work.[9]
In June 2023, rapper Logic sold his catalog to Influence Media in an eight-figure deal that included 185 songs, among them “1-800-273-8255,” “Homicide,” “Sucker for Pain,” and “Everyday.”[16][17]
In September 2023, Influence invested in the publishing catalog of songwriter and producer Jesse Frasure in partnership with Warner Chappell Music Nashville. The acquisition included over 160 songs such as “Dirt on My Boots” by Jon Pardi, “One Mississippi” by Kane Brown and “What’s Your Country Song” by Thomas Rhett. The deal, completed in collaboration with Warner Chappell Music Nashville President and CEO Ben Vaughn, also included Frasure’s future works. At the time, Frasure had co-written 22 number one songs and produced an additional eight number one songs.[18][19]
That same month, Influence acquired 118 songs from the catalog of songwriter and producer Dre Moon, including his stake in hits such as “Heartless” by The Weeknd, “Drunk In Love” by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z, and “Armed and Dangerous” by Juice WRLD. Influence also invested in 150 songs from the catalog of producer 30 Roc, including his stake in “The Box” by Roddy Rich, “Stargazing” by Travis Scott, and “King’s Dead” by Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and Future.[20][21]
In December 2023, Influence acquired the entire pre-2021 recorded music catalog of Enrique Inglesias, including songs such as “Bailando” and “Be With You.” The nine-figure deal also included the rights to Inglesias’ name, image and likeness (NIL)—the company’s first deal of this kind.[22][23][24][25] By May 2024, Influence had completed five NIL deals.[26]
Label launch and further financing (2024–present)
[edit]
In July 2024, Influence Media Partners launched SLANG, an in-house label and music publisher. The label is led by Influence’s Rene McLean, former founder of the creative agency RPM GRP and manager of artists such as LMFAO, Kelis, and Cam’ron. The label’s initial roster included Will Smith, producers Camper and 30 Roc, and hip-hop duo The Underachievers.[27][28][29]
In January 2025, Influence raised approximately $360 million in debt financing through its first asset-backed securitization, collateralized by royalties from part of its catalog portfolio. The transaction was led by Goldman Sachs and Truist, with participation from investors including Nuveen, PPM America, Aflac, Pacific Life, and accounts managed by HPS Investment Partners.[30][31]
In April 2025, Influence partnered with DJ Khaled and We the Best Music Group to establish two joint ventures focused on developing film and television projects, as well as commercial partnerships tied to Khaled’s name, image, and likeness. The collaboration also included the acquisition of DJ Khaled’s entire recording and publishing catalog in a deal valued in the “low nine-figure range,” according to Variety.[32][33] Active joint venture projects include the film Killing Castro, starring Al Pacino, with DJ Khaled, Rene McLean, Lylette Pizarro, and Jon Jashni serving as executive producers, as well as Janko Nation, an upcoming film from Shottas director Cess Silvera.[34][35]
SLANG was launched by Influence Media Partners in July 2024 as the company’s record label and music publishing platform, with a focus on artist development and new music distribution.[7] Its initial roster included Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist Will Smith (signed to a distribution deal), multi-platinum producer Camper, and Grammy-winning producer 30 Roc, known for songs such as “The Box” by Roddy Rich and “Stargazing” by Travis Scott. In addition, SLANG partnered with developing artists such as rapper and singer Leaf, Flatbush-based rap group The Underachievers, and Atlanta-based rappers Truththebull and RY XP.[27][28][29]
The label is led by its CEO, Influence Partner and Founding Advisor Rene McLean, who had previously worked at Virgin Records, RCA Records, and Elektra Records.[2][34] Together with Lylette Pizarro, founder and partner at Influence, McLean helped organize Visa Live at The Louvre in Paris, France ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics. SLANG label client RaiNao was booked alongside Post Malone for the event.[24][36]
In December 2024, SLANG client Will Smith’s reached No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart with “You Can Make It” featuring Fridayy and Sunday Service Choir.[37][38]
