Tharaka Wasalamudaliarachchi (born 18th October 1973) is a Sri Lankan author, journalist, actress and a social media influencer.
Mostly known for her television work “Helidarawwa”[1] (හෙළිදරව්ව), books Kalu (කළු), Mati (මැටි)[2], Dehi (දෙහි)[3] and her acting work in Pipi Piyum[4] (පිපි පියුම්). In addition, Tharaka is also known as a song writer as well as a social media influencer as well.
Tharaka Wasalamudaliarachchi (born 18 October 1973 in Matara, Sri Lanka) is a Sri Lankan author, former actress, former news anchor, former television producer, songwriter, and social media influencer. Over a multi-decade career, she has gained recognition for her contributions to literature, journalism, television, and the arts.
Early Life and Education

Tharaka was born to a journalist and economics teacher father, and a bank manager mother. She began her education at Deyiyandara Central College and Pallewela Maha Vidyalaya. And later attending St. Thomas Girls’ High School, Matara. She pursued higher education at Sri Jayewardenepura University, completing a Bachelor’s degree in 2017, and later earned her Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Kelaniya in 2019. She also holds a Diploma in Journalism from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. She studied the Masters of Law (LLM) in Public law and Human Rights at Buckinghamshire New University, England UK. Career and Television

She began her career at a very young age, in her teen years by writing articles to Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and “Ruhunu Sevaya” a popular radio station at the time[5] as well as many leading newspapers. In 1997, she hosted a few episodes of the morning show “Shanida Ayubowan”, And served as co-editor of the First Television Magazine of “TV Sri Lanka Magazine” (Capital Maharaja Group) in 1998. And she was among the first journalists to join Swarnavahini TV [6]. She contributed to shows such as “Deshapalana Sathiya” and worked behind the scenes on “Rathu Ira”.


Her breakthrough came with “Helidarawwa”[7], an investigative mystery television program she hosted and produced in 2000–2001. It is a program where we help people in need and who suffering to protect their human rights and to fight injustice and to expose fraud, corruption and injustice. It became a national hit and earned her two Sumathi Awards for Best Investigative Program of 2000 and 2001. She later created and hosted “Charitha”[8], which was telecasted at Swarnavahini TV Channel. a biographical documentary series that also won a Sumathi Award in 2007.

She served as a News Anchor of Live@8, a prime-time news broadcast at Swarnavahini TV Channel in 2001. She hosted a Sinhala Literacy Program called “පෙරවදන[9]“. It was a Sri Lankan TV Program that has dedicated the most airtime for the literary field and the authors of Sri Lanka. It was a program that aired almost everyday 5 days a week on Swarnavahini TV for half an hour.

Personal Life Tharaka is married to renowned journalist Chandana Sooriyabandara[11]. They have three children: Gimhan, Muniwara, and Nimna Sooriyabandara. Following the births of her sons in 2003 and 2011, she took brief hiatuses from her career but returned each time with new work in literature and media.
