RAE IS GOING TO AIR OUT HER FRUSTRATIONS
The English Wiktionary is way too arbitrary with English spelling variants, some pages are just “X standard spelling variant of Y” or “X alternative spelling of Y” with a link to the “proper” spelling of the word that actually has all of the meanings. These are not fucking alternative spellings, nothing about them is “alternative“, they are just different ways to spell the same word in different parts of the English-speaking world.
It gets to the point where if a Brit wants to look up the definition of honour then they have to go through a completely unnecessary buffer page first to go to honor, the English spelling. Which is completely idiotic because the English Wikipedia uses the Commonwealth spelling for the actual article itself, which is linked to on the Wiktionary entry which uses American English spelling!!!!!!
Or if an American wants to look up the definition of favorite then they have to go through their own completely unnecessary buffer page to go to favourite, the Commonwealth spelling, instead, because their spelling is apparently an “alternative form” that is nonexistent and invalid and we’re going to force you to look at our spelling instead even though, mmm what’s that, favour, one of the constituent roots of the word, redirects to favor, the American spelling!!
This is far more egregious of a problem than WP:ENGVAR on the English Wikipedia (which is already a fucking mess as-is). This should have been standardized to some extent from the very beginning, but it wasn’t and it never has been, so anyone wanting to use this dictionary is left with this completely inconsistent mess of spelling conflicts that are half-assedly “resolved” with nothing more than a bodge. The pages are obligated to be more than redirects to the “preferred” spelling because this is a dictionary and you’re expected to have listings on every English word even if it’s supposedly invalid and garbage by the first edit’s definition.
There is absolutely no reason for this to be a thing, and for this to continue being a thing. Have both entries have the same exact definitions because they’re the same word. Maybe different quotations, or just merge them all in the same thing because anyone over five knows that color and colour mean the same exact thing. The year is 2025. This is 100% possible and it should have been done years ago. This is an objective point of confusion to users of the dictionary and an active inconvenience to anyone editing it.
“But rae,” you say, “each dialect has its own etymology because of that bastard Noah Webster which would invariably require them to be separate anyways!”
Okay, but this could be trivially solved by having separate pages for each dialect that 1. has the definition for the word irrespective of its dialect that is identical between both forms of the word, 2. has its own etymology that can be extended from the other to more accurately specify how this “alternate” spelling came to diverge from the other one, and 3. notes that there are ways this word is spelled in other parts of the word that differs from the one that you’re looking at.
It’s simple. It’s so simple. It’s all just Wikitext. We have templates. Transclude the common definition on both pages, transclude a template for a common etymology if you have to, and then move on with your life knowing happily that all forms of the same exact word are now given representations that make sense and are not a pain in the ass to look up half of the time. This doesn’t have to be a problem. There must be something I’m missing here because the solution seems so fucking obvious it’s unreal no one has done anything about this.
But as with most things, foundations are rigid and no common man (or woman or they) would have the power or ability to influence a well-established policy in such a direction as this. So what the fuck ever.

- A little bit pedantic maybe, but favors US spelling for parlor despite Wiktionary:Beer parlour being a thing (maybe American bias but I feel that Wikimedia Foundation, being an American company, should have US English used on the names of its internal wiki pages?)
