Climate of Cape Town

Cape Town has a temperate Oceanic climate. Cape Town is known for its changeable weather due to being located between hotter inland areas and the colder southern ocean. The climate is also influenced by False Bay which is much warmer than the surrounding ocean which can cause lake-effect rain where showers intensify over the bay and heavy rains especially to the Southern Suburbs near the mountains.

Summer which lasts from December to March are warm but are prone to heatwaves due to Berg wind from the karoo which can bring temperatures above 28°C for multiple days. Rainfall is less during this season but showers can still be heavy in forms of thunderstorms. The hottest temperature recorded in cape town was 43.2°C (109.5 °F), on 29 January 2015

Winter lasts from June to August this season can bring strong winds and large cold fronts which sweep across the city bringing rainfall and cold for many days. July and August are notoriously known to bring lots of rainy weather to the city.

During the winter the berg wind cools and becomes more of typical katabatic wind, which can cause berg wind to become a colder variant during the winter, similar to cold waves in the United States but to a much less intense degree which can sweep into the cape, because of this, winter low temperatures in the night can get cold enough for frost to form which happens a very few times in the year in midwinter. Snow is extremely rare in the city itself however the mountains nearby get covered with snow every winter. The last time snow fell in the city was in July 2013. The coldest temperature recorded in Cape Town was -4.3°C (24.26°F) on 23 July 1992
