Washi depicted on the Narmer Palette, moments before death c. 3112 BC

Washi or Wash was the last king of Mehiu in the protodynastic period of Egypt. His capital was stationed at Buto. He was preceded by Ka and was succeded by Narmer.

Washi is known only from the Narmer Palette, and thus very little is known about his reign. He was described to be “un-egyptian in appearance” and his only depiction is him about to be clubbed by Narmer.[1][2] His “un-egyptian” appearance could possibly mean he was a usurper of the throne. The population of Mehiu during Washi’s reign was no fewer than 120,000 based off the captive count mentioned on the Narmer Macehead.[3]

Washi was assassinated during the Conquest of Mehiu by Narmer to establish his dominance over the region of Lower Egypt. The only known depiction of this is the recto of the Narmer Palette, where Narmer is in the “striking the enemy” pose, about to kill Washi.
