Song by G-Dragon
“Who You?” (Korean: 니가 뭔데; RR: Niga mwonde) is a song recorded by South Korean singer-rapper G-Dragon for his second studio album Coup d’Etat (2013). The song was released digitally on September 2, 2013, through YG Entertainment, and later promoted as a single with a music video on November 13, 2013. The track was written by G-Dragon and produced by Kush and Choice37.[1]
Background and release
[edit]
“Who You?” was included on Coup d’État Part 1, which was released online on September 2, 2013.[2] On October 5, 2013, G-Dragon filmed the music video at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Goyang with approximately 1,000 fans.[3][4][5]
The final video premiered on November 13, 2013, at 8:08 p.m. KST, a time symbolizing G-Dragon’s birth date August 18, 1988.[1] The song was initially titled “Fuck You,” later changed to “Hate You,” before being finalized as “Who You?” for broadcast approval.
Composition and lyrics
[edit]
“Who You?” is a mid-tempo pop and hip-hop song featuring melodic guitar sounds and a smooth vocal performance. Lyrically, it expresses conflicted feelings toward a past lover, alternating between love and resentment.[6] Critics noted its emotional tone and described it as a softer, more introspective counterpart to G-Dragon’s energetic single “Crooked”.[7]
The music video for “Who You?” depicts G-Dragon performing inside a transparent glass enclosure filled with personal items such as clothing, shoes, and a car, while 1,000 fans record from outside.[3] 1,000 fans directly participated in filming, edited and produced the music video, which is unusual.[1] The visual concept was praised for its emotional honesty and minimalist execution.[7] In September 2018, the video surpassed 100 million views on YouTube, becoming G-Dragon’s second solo music video to reach the milestone after “Crooked.”[8][9][10]
Commercial performance
[edit]
“Who You?” debuted at number one on South Korea’s Circle Digital Chart, selling over 347,000 digital downloads in its first week.[11] The single also topped several domestic streaming platforms including Melon and Naver Music.[12] G-Dragon became the first Korean solo artist to achieve four Music Bank wins with different songs from the same album, including “Black,” “Coup d’État,” “Crooked,” and “Who You?”.[13]
“Who You?” received positive reviews from critics. UnitedKpop praised the song for showcasing “G-Dragon’s more reflective and vulnerable side.”[6] Hypebeast commended the music video’s concept, calling it “a transparent metaphor for fame and isolation.”[7]
