Years ago, Wikipedia articles were polluted with sections named “Trivia”. Eventually these disappeared completely, being replaced now with sections titled “Popular culture” or “In popular culture”. For the most part, a standard practice for these sections requires that an entry in such a section be linked to a related Wikipedia article, and entries that fail to do so are removed from the list. Some lists, by their very nature, are going to include content that may not yet have articles. For examples, a list of award winning people or a list of elected officials, etc. Are you seriously suggesting that some years should be left blank because there is no article on the winner? Someone who takes the time to create and maintain an article such as List of mayors of Washington, D.C. should not be told that they should not create this article until every mayor of Washington, D.C. has an article. Furthermore, guidelines for stand-alone list articles clearly state that not every item in a list needs to be notable, as long as the topic is.
I think we all know that in a case like List of mayors of Washington, D.C., someone will eventually write an article on the redlinked names. With sources that document notability, I have added redlinked names to lists that I have created. I do go back and eventually create articles as an ongoing personal project. However, I always aim for at least a C class article. As a participant of the effort to actively get all stubs to at least start class, any suggestion to add more stubs to Wikipedia is horrible. Creating content for Wikipedia is a process; we should embrace the nudge and possibilities of a redlink, rather than prohibiting them. Rublamb (talk) 23:23, 10 September 2025 (UTC)
