  • Date: Sunday 14 September 2025
  • Time: midday to 2pm
  • Location: Virtual Meeting at this link https://meet.jit.si/WikiAotearoa
IMPORTANT: The first person joining the meeting needs to sign in as the “Moderator” using a Google, Facebook, or GitHub account; other attendees can then join without any authentication – see the jitsi blog for more information.
NOTE: This video conferencing software link will ask permission to use your computer camera and microphone. You will need to agree to get full functionality. Google Chrome or Chromium is recommended for the best experience (not all aspects work correctly with other browsers). The Jitsi web-based video conferencing platform is 100% open source and fully encrypted. No account is needed and it’s free.
  • Cost: Free

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you’ve been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.

If you’re not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that’s okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That’s the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don’t want to contribute during the video call.
If you’re not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

This is a monthly event running every 4 weeks, but double check the Aotearoa New Zealand Online page to confirm.

Update from Treasurer, WANZ

[edit]

  • As reported last month, in early March 2026, WANZ must submit a proposal to WMF for a further three years of funding. As part of this submission, we will need to identify major initiatives that we wish to support, particularly in the first funding year (2026-27). We will be calling for expressions of interest later this year, for projects that will require significant funding in the 2026-27 period. Projects that are identified early are more likely to receive funding in the 2026-27 year, subject to the overall limits of our funding capacity. If you have an idea for something that would require a large grant, please get underway with writing up a preliminary proposal. We will likely close-off the EOI round by late November.

A telegram group has been created for Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand editors. If you are interested in joining the discussion click this link.

Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2025–26

[edit]

If you’re an event organiser, don’t forget to add your event as a programme to the Campaign Dashboard July 2025 – June 2026. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programmes to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.

If you’re interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact info @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It’s really simple – we promise!

The Commons Workflow

[edit]

In April Giantflightlessbirds ran a workshop in Adelaide on adding photos to Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and ultimately Wikipedia. It touched on Freedom of Panorama, moveClaim, DuplicateReferences, WikiShootMe, galleries, CropTool, the Volunteer Response Team, negotiating a licence change, and so on. The response to the workshop was so positive it is now an online webinar series, aimed at beginners who have done some Wikipedia editing or photo uploading but want to build their skills; Wikipedia editors who don’t really upload many photos, or Commons photographers who are not sure exactly what Wikidata is for. The course runs on the 1st, 8th, and 15th of October, 7pm NZDT; the three sessions cost NZ$20 to register online (but if anyone is feeling strapped for cast they can contact Mike and have this refunded). The handout for the workshop is available on Commons.

  • WikiCite 2025 Friday 29th to Sunday 31st of August – a hybrid and modular format, 3-day conference, summit, and hack day dedicated to the vision of creating an ecosystem for bibliographic data to serve as an open infrastructure for research, education, and information quality (specifically authority control) across the web.
  • GLAMwiki 2025 (30 October to 1 November, 2025) – an “in person only” conference to be held in Lisbon, Portugal. The GLAM Wiki community is a worldwide network, with projects, initiatives, and activities spanning every timezone and continent. Giantflightlessbirds is attending. Any others?
  • WikidataCon 2025 31 October – 02 November 2025 – online conference only. A conference aimed at connecting people through Linked Open Data.
  • Scholarships to travel to Wikimania 2026 in Paris have opened. Editors are encouraged to apply. Please see this page and pay particular attention to the extended advice for filling in the scholarship application.

Round table for participants

[edit]

Opportunity to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated. You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

  1. Gave a 30 minute invited talk on the New Zealand Thesis Project, to open the second day of WikiCite 2025. This was great fun, and I’m looking forward to catching up with the rest of the presentations when recordings are released.
  2. Otago: Made some changes to the writer John Mulgan‘s page after one of the librarians at Otago noticed it was a bit light on details around why there was speculation about his death. Improved and created some Wikidata items relating to Dunedin architects Arthur Louis Salmond, Henry Burt and Robert Vanes, connecting them to the archive held at the Hocken, and uploaded some new images by a university photographer Axel helped tracked down. Gave a talk to the Department of Anatomy, started working with the dental school, and discovered another way of dealing with COI, when you are autopatrolled (thanks Oronsay). So I intend to use that process (marking articles ‘unreviewed’) for Otago-related pages unless I think they might be controversial, in which case I might still put them AFC or ask someone else to look them over.
  3. Joined the Science hub, waiting to see what activities it gets involved in. Also joined the September Memory of the World Challenge, just to support the initiative.
  • Paora After four weeks overseas, I have been catching up on the past month’s death notices, and updating articles and updating / creating Wikidata items. Took lots of photos on my travels and have begun added selected photos to Wikicommons. Suggests Peggy Koopman-Boyden could do with improvement!
  • CopperAlchemy (talk) Preparing for our Board/Committee meeting next week. Also working on our Business Activity Plan for the current 12 months, along with an associated outreach plan. Alongside this working on our 3 – 5 year Strategic Plan which will form the basis of our grant application in the new year. We will be seeking community input to help us plan for our growth and what the future focus of WANZ should be, more information to come. The paid team, along with Siobhan and Mike, have met Australia’s paid team to collaboration on the Commons:Wiki Science Competition 2025. Sophie and Dianne are focusing on building our skills for training and supporting new editors, and appreciate the support and links from Siobhan.
  • Dactylantha – discussed work she has been doing including a large proposal for deletion due to copyright issues for some recent uploads. Also created this meta page template for WANZ members to add to their meta page.

Review of questions raised during round table

[edit]

  • A “Christmas list” of issues was given to the group as a result of work done by User:Oronsay on new New Zealand articles and everyone attempted to resolve the issues raised.
  • A discussion on the use of the BHL2Wiki tool and also the Cites tool linked to in the BHL2Wiki tool.

Presentations, tips, tools
