Wikipedia is not merely a site of reference information but is rapidly becoming the de facto site for representing the world to itself. We need to understand more about that representation. Your Wikipedia project will be to create or expand a Wikipedia page dedicated to the Middle East and/or North Africa. It is a demonstrated fact that there is uneven levels of geographic representations on Wikipedia.
Decolonizing Wikipedia content is a critical effort aimed at addressing the historical biases and Eurocentric perspectives that have platform’s articles and information. Wikipedia, as one of the largest and most influential online encyclopedias, plays a significant role in shaping public knowledge and understanding of the world. However, it is not immune to the broader societal issues of colonialism, imperialism, and cultural hegemony, which have often resulted in the marginalization and erasure of non-Western perspectives, histories, and voices.
To decolonize Wikipedia content, several key strategies can be employed:
- Diverse Contributorship: Encourage and actively seek contributions from individuals representing diverse cultural backgrounds, regions, and languages. By broadening the contributor base, Wikipedia can begin to incorporate more varied perspectives and experiences.
- Inclusivity and Equity: Foster an inclusive and equitable editing environment by providing resources, support, and training to underrepresented groups. Addressing the systemic barriers that hinder participation from marginalized communities can empower them to share their knowledge and stories.
- Reliable Sources from Multiple Perspectives: Acknowledge and utilize sources beyond the Western canon. Recognize the importance of indigenous knowledge, oral traditions, and non- Western scholarly works. Engage with local historians and experts who can provide context and insights often missing from mainstream narratives.
- Bias Recognition and Correction: Encourage editors to critically examine articles for implicit biases and inaccuracies, and actively work to correct them. This process involves questioning assumptions and representations and rectifying instances of colonialist language or framing.
- Addressing Topics of Relevance: Prioritize and expand coverage of topics that are relevant to marginalized communities, regions, and histories. These subjects might have been overlooked or underrepresented in the past due to Eurocentric biases.
- Multilingualism: Support efforts to improve Wikipedia content in languages other than English. Many non-English articles are currently underrepresented, and enhancing their quality and coverage can provide a more comprehensive understanding of global perspectives.
- Collaborations with Indigenous Communities: Engage in respectful collaborations with indigenous communities to ensure their history, culture, and knowledge are accurately represented and protected on Wikipedia.
- Contextualizing History: Present historical events within their broader cultural, social, and political contexts, avoiding reductionist narratives that may perpetuate stereotypes or colonial perspectives.
