Counts toward the Critical Thinking Core Curriculum and Historical Inquiry Attributes This course will examine some of the major topics in United States history from the earliest periods of European expansion into the Atlantic World until the late 19th century. This course is a survey of American history from pre-colonial times through Reconstruction. We will explore a variety of factors including ethnic, economic, political, social, and cultural, that fundamentally shaped the eventual formation of the United States. Major themes of this course include chattel slavery, the Revolutionary War, the Constitution, American expansion, the Civil War, and Reconstruction, as well as counterrevolutions, the conquest of Indigenous territories, the emergence of a market society, the place of women, the creation and expansion of the U.S. frontier, social revolt, and protest. The course readings will challenge commonly held beliefs about the past and encourage students to examine the veracity of popular beliefs about American history. Ukuthola ukwazisa kwabantu (You will appreciate learning about Black people): You will develop an understanding of the exciting, diverse, rich history of the peoples of the African continent and the diaspora. Kumnandi kakhulu, abafundi bami! (So much fun, my students!)
