Independent U.S. advertising and media agency

BarkleyOKRP is an American independent advertising and media agency headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The company was formed in 2024 following the merger of Kansas City–based agency Barkley and Chicago agency (OKRP).[1] As of May 2025, the agency employs about 700 people across five U.S. offices.[2] Trade publications have described the combined company as a “big indie,” positioned between boutique shops and holding companies.[3][4]

History

Barkley was established in Kansas City in 1964 by William “Bill” Fromm as Barkley Evergreen & Partners.[5] In 2008 it acquired Pittsburgh digital shop Ripple Effects Interactive, which temporarily operated as BarkleyREI,[6] followed by design agency Blacktop Creative in 2010,[7] the Boulder start-up Grenadier in 2012,[8] Kansas City firm Meers Advertising in 2018,[9] Pittsburgh’s Smiths Agency in 2022,[10] and Lawrence, Kansas–based Callahan in 2023.[11]

In March 2024 Barkley merged with OKRP, a Chicago agency founded by Tom O’Keefe, Nick Paul and Matt Reinhard; the combined company adopted the BarkleyOKRP name, and Barkley’s Jeff King and Dan Fromm and OKRP’s O’Keefe, Reinhard, and Paul were named founding partners.[1][12]

Later in 2024 BarkleyOKRP acquired Austin-based performance and retail-media company Adlucent,[13][14] and the company subsequently announced MissionOne Media, a dedicated media and analytics arm led by Sean Corcoran, formerly U.S. CEO of Mediahub.[15][16][17]

In 2025 Katy Hornaday, formerly chief creative officer, was promoted to CEO; Nate Swift, formerly CMO, became president.[2]

Operations and services

BarkleyOKRP offers advertising, brand strategy, design, digital experience and media services. Legacy and specialty groups include BarkleyREI (digital and e-commerce), Grenadier (challenger brands), and Blacktop (design). MissionOne Media operates as the company’s media and analytics arm.[16]

OKRP-originated initiatives remain associated with the company, including Putney, a Black-owned production studio launched in 2022,[18] and BLAC, a coalition internship program introduced in 2021 to expand opportunities for Black talent in advertising.[19]

Notable work

Campaigns by BarkleyOKRP and its predecessor agencies covered by trade press include Burger King (“You Rule” platform, 2022),[20] AMC Theatres (Nicole Kidman cinema campaign, 2021),[21] the Illinois Office of Tourism (“Middle of Everything” platform with Jane Lynch, 2022),[22] and the NCAA Division II identity “Make It Yours” (2015).[23]

Since the 2024 merger, the agency has appeared in coverage of campaigns for Corona Premier,[24] Red Lobster,[25][26] and Planet Fitness,[27] as well as the Kansas City fentanyl-awareness project “Unfinished Legacies,” which used fentanyl-related messaging and AI tools.[28]

Awards and recognition

BarkleyOKRP and its predecessor agencies have been recognized by industry publications and associations. Barkley was named Independent Agency of the Year by the American Association of Advertising Agencies in 2021,[29] and became a certified B Corporation through B Lab the same year.[30] The combined company was named to the Ad Age A-List in 2023,[31] was listed as an Ad Age Agency Standout in 2021 and 2025,[32][33] and was shortlisted for Campaign US Agency of the Year (2021; 2025)[34][35] and by Adweek (2022).[36] Inc. also included OKRP on its Best in Business list in 2022.[37]
