Afghanistan Launches Massive Polio Vaccination Drive Targeting 7.3 Million Children

Health Experts Stress Importance of Vaccination

According to Dr. Mojtaba Sufi, a senior health advisor under the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, vaccination remains the only reliable method to prevent polio.

“Vaccination is the most effective tool we have against polio,” Dr. Sufi noted. “These vaccines are provided through support from the international community, and their continued use is vital.”

Polio Cases Decline Significantly

The latest figures highlight progress in Afghanistan’s fight against polio. As of 2025, only two WPV1 cases have been reported, compared to 25 confirmed cases in 2024. This represents a remarkable improvement, but health authorities caution that the virus still poses a threat, especially in hard-to-reach and conflict-affected regions.

International Travel Guidelines for Polio-Affected Areas

To prevent the spread of the virus across borders, global health agencies have issued travel advisories:

OrganizationRecommendation for Travelers to Polio-Affected Areas
CDC (USA)Travelers must be fully vaccinated before visiting polio-infected regions. A booster dose may be advised for long-term visitors.
WHOResidents and travelers staying over 4 weeks in affected areas should receive an additional dose of oral or inactivated polio vaccine within 4 weeks to 12 months prior to departure.

As of July 23, 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists 41 countries as being at risk for poliovirus transmission.

Continued Support Vital for Polio Eradication

Despite the challenges, Afghanistan’s health authorities remain committed to fighting polio through sustained outreach, local healthcare engagement, and international assistance.

Global health experts agree that eradicating polio requires persistent vaccination campaigns, improved access to healthcare, and strong public communication.
