Al‑Nafla (Arabic: النافلة) is a traditional cultural celebration in Qatar, held annually on the 14th day of the Islamic month of Shaʿban. The occasion marks the approach of the holy month of Ramadan and emphasizes themes of charity, neighborliness and preparation for fasting.

The term “Nafla” (نافلة) in Arabic can mean an additional or voluntary act; in this context it refers to a supplementary celebration of giving before Ramadan. The celebration is specifically held on 14th day of the Islamic month of Shaʿban, right before the last day of the month, signaling preparation for the coming month of fasting. Local heritage researchers in Qatar note that the tradition is long-established and part of the folk heritage of Qatari neighborhoods.[1][2]

Customs and practices

[edit]

During Al-Nafla:

  • Families prepare traditional Qatari dishes (such as harees, thareed, sago, aseeda) and share them with neighbours, relatives and the less-fortunate.[1][3]
  • Children dress in traditional clothes, sing folk songs (“Yal-Nafla Ya Um El-Shaham Wil-laham”), and go around their neighbourhoods carrying baskets of nuts and candies, which are given out by households.[1][3]
  • The day emphasises generosity, hospitality and social solidarity, viewed as preparatory to the altruism expected during Ramadan.[1][3]
