2025 building collapse in Ethiopia
On 1 October 2025, the scaffolding of Arerti Mariyam Church collapsed during construction that caused over 30 people death. The incident happened during a pilgrimage to mark the anniversary of Virgin Mary in Arerti district, Amhara region of Ethiopia at 4:45 GMT.[1]

On 1 October 2025, the scaffolding of Arerti Mariyam Church pending construction collapsed, killing over 30 people. The accident happened in Arerti town, Minjar Shenkora, North Shewa Zone, Amhara Region at 7:45am [4:45 GMT]. The accident happened during a pilgrimage to mark Virgin Mary annual festival. Ahmed Gebeyehu, Minjar District Police Commander told the death toll was increasing as many victims transported to hospital. Local police dismissed the toll death toll as reached 36.[1]
Speaking at Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, local official Atnafu Abate stated some victims remained under ruble and unable to provide rescue operation.[2]
