The certification is awarded by the American Medical Billing Association (AMBA), a U.S.-based professional organization representing medical billing professionals. The CMRS credential is intended to demonstrate knowledge of medical billing procedures, reimbursement systems, and healthcare compliance standards.[1]

The CMRS certification is one of several credentials available to medical billing professionals in the United States and is not mandated by any federal or state regulatory authority.[2]

Medical billing is a specialized administrative function within the U.S. healthcare system that focuses on claim submission, reimbursement, and payment follow-up. The CMRS credential is designed to assess a candidate’s understanding of healthcare reimbursement processes, medical coding systems, insurance billing workflows, and regulatory compliance. An exam is offered to members of the AMBA to keep their CMRS credential up to date. In most instances, exam enrollment will be granted the same day the exam is purchased. There is a 45-day period to complete the exam once enrolled. To pass the exam, a score 85% or higher overall is required. Upon passing the exam, the CMRS designation is awarded and a certificate is issued.[5] A further 15 continuing education units (CEUs) are required each year to maintain CMRS certification along with a membership in AMBA. Fifty percent of the annual CEUs must come through the association.[6]

Candidates taking the CMRS examination are permitted to use standard medical coding reference materials, including the current editions of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS code books. AMBA also provides access to its proprietary coding software for exam preparation purposes.[7]

AMBA publishes an optional CMRS study guide intended to assist candidates in preparing for the examination. Use of the study guide is not required to sit for the exam.[7]
