Irish politician and former footballer
Daniel Ennis is an Irish politician and former footballer who has served on Dublin City Council for the North Inner City since 2024.
Ennis was a defender whose football career encompassed senior League of Ireland football and sustained involvement in Dublin’s amateur game. A native of Dublin’s North Strand, he first came to prominence with Belvedere FC in the Leinster Senior League, which led to his signing by Shelbourne F.C. ahead of the 2006 League of Ireland season. He made one senior league appearance for Shelbourne before moving to Bohemians in 2008, where he featured regularly with the club’s A Championship side over the following two seasons. In January 2010, Ennis signed for Bray Wanderers under Eddie Gormley but left the club later that year without making a senior appearance. He subsequently returned to the amateur ranks, playing for Cherry Orchard F.C. during the 2011 and 2012 seasons and taking part in the club’s run to the latter stages of the 2012 FAI Cup.[1]
Following the end of his playing career, Ennis remained active within the game at the grassroots level, serving as vice-chairman of East Wall Bessborough FC and becoming a public advocate for improved football facilities in Dublin’s north inner city.[2]
Ennis ran in the 2024 Dublin City Council election as a Social Democrats candidate in the North Inner City ward and was elected on the 12th count.[3]
On 21 June 2024, at the annual meeting of Dublin City Council, the Social Democrats, alongside Sinn Féin, People Before Profit and a number of Independent councillors put Ennis forward as a candidate to become Lord Mayor of Dublin.[4] Ennis was defeated 25-32 in favour of Fine Gael‘s James Geoghegan.[5] After Geoghegan vacated the office in December 2024, he once again put his name forward, with him being defeated 19-34 in favour of Fine Gael’s Emma Blain.[6]
Ennis was selected to be the Social Democrats’ candidate for the 2026 Dublin Central by-election in December 2025.[7]
