Alawite-Bedouin clashes
The 2025 Homs attacks were a series of assaults in the Homs Governorate, Syria, during which armed groups from the Bani Khalid tribal militia targeted innocent Alawite civilians in several neighborhoods of Homs, including the predominantly Alawite Al-Zahraa neighborhood.
The violence began after the murder of a Bani Khalid couple in the town of Zaidal on 23 November 2025. Sectarian phrases were found written at the crime scene, leading members of the tribe to assume that Alawite residents might have been responsible.
However, the Syrian Ministry of Interior later announced that the primary suspect was Mohammad al-Hameed bin Khalifa (born 1999), a Sunni relative of the victims who was reportedly using crystal methamphetamine. According to the ministry’s spokesperson, the suspect confessed to committing the murders for theft, exploiting his familiarity with the victims’ home, and then fabricating sectarian graffiti to mislead investigators.[1]
Before this information became public, elements of the Bani Khalid tribe carried out revenge attacks against Alawite-majority civilian neighborhoods in Homs. These assaults resulted in civilian deaths and injuries, significant property destruction, and displacement of residents.
The Syrian Interim Government was criticized by observers for responding slowly to the violence. Despite eventually deploying forces to stop the tribal militias, the intentional delayed intervention allowed several hours of attacks on Alawite neighborhoods.
