Anurag Sharma is retired Indian police service officer of the 1992 batch.[1] A native of Rajasthan, he served as the Director General of Police (DGP) for the state of Telangana from 2014 until his retirement in 2017.
Following his superannuation he served as Advisor to the Government of Telangana on police and security matters.[2]
Career
Commissioner of Police of Hyderabad
Sharma served as the acting Commissioner of Police of Hyderabad beginning in April 2012.[3] He was formally appointed as Commissioner of Police on 30 September 2012.[4][5]
Promotion and appointment as Telangana DGP
In April 2014, while serving as Hyderabad Police Commissioner, Sharma was promoted to the rank of Director General of Police.[6] Following the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, he was appointed as Director General of Police for the Telangana in June 2014.[7][8][9]

Extensions of tenure
In January 2015, the Ministry of Affairs approved an extension of Sharma’s tenure.[10] The Ministry clarified that law and order in Hyderabad the common capital, would remain under his administrative control.[11] Originally scheduled to retire in February 2017, Sharma received a six-month extension until November 2014.[12][13]
Initiatives
During his tenure, Sharma introduced technological initiatives in police operations. In December 2014, he oversaw the launch of a program to bring police stations in Hyderabad to Facebook for public engagement.[14][15] In December 2015, a mobile video conferencing system was introduced to enable supervision of field operations via smartphones.[16]
In February 2017, Sharma directed the preparation of a strategic document addressing technology, infrastructure and human resources for the police force.[17]
