Nigerian clean energy policy expert

Damilola Hamid Balogun is a Nigerian social impact entrepreneur and sustainability advocate. He is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN), a pan-African organisation focused on youth empowerment, sustainable development, clean energy access, and climate action across Africa and the Global South. In 2025, he was named to the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 (Trailblazers) list for his work in sustainability and youth leadership.[1]

Early life and education

[edit]

Balogun was born and raised in Nigeria. He has stated that growing up in communities affected by socio-economic inequality and environmental challenges influenced his interest in governance, development policy, and social impact.[2]

He studied law, developing an interest in institutional reform, policy processes, and social justice. He later pursued postgraduate education in sustainability and social innovation to broaden his professional focus beyond legal practice.

Balogun earned a Master of Science in Entrepreneurship, Sustainability and Social Change from Linnaeus University in Sweden, where his studies focused on sustainable enterprise development and leadership in complex development contexts.[2] He also completed professional training in Climate, Energy and Sustainability Policy at the University of Florence in Italy.[2]

Youth Sustainable Development Network

[edit]

In 2019, while still a student, Balogun co-founded the Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN). The organisation was established to provide a platform through which young people could contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through education, policy engagement, and community-based initiatives.

As Chief Executive Officer, Balogun has overseen YSDN’s development into a pan-African network delivering programmes focused on sustainability education, leadership development, policy participation, and clean energy access.[2]

Under his leadership, YSDN has collaborated with academic institutions, civil society organisations, and development actors to support youth participation in national and international policy dialogues related to sustainable development and climate action.

Climate action and clean energy

[edit]

A significant component of Balogun’s work has focused on clean energy access and climate resilience, particularly for underserved communities and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). His work has included advocacy for renewable energy adoption, promotion of solar energy solutions, and support for climate-aligned initiatives linked to agriculture and food security.[2]

His work aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), with an emphasis on community-centred and locally driven responses to environmental challenges.[2]

Public engagement and advocacy

[edit]

Balogun has participated in international forums, policy platforms, and stakeholder engagements focused on climate action, energy transition, youth inclusion, and sustainable development.

In 2024, he participated in stakeholder engagements held in Rabat, Morocco, advocating for youth empowerment and youth-led approaches to global sustainability challenges.[3]

Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders Programme

[edit]

In 2025, Balogun was selected as one of 43 participants in the Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leaders (ADEL) Programme, held in Rabat, Morocco.[1] The programme, organised by the Policy Center for the New South, brings together emerging leaders from government, civil society, academia, and the private sector to engage in dialogue on global governance, leadership, and development cooperation between the Global South and the Global North.

During the programme, Balogun participated in discussions and media engagements on the role of emerging professionals in shaping climate and energy priorities, with a focus on context-specific solutions for Africa’s energy transition.[1]

[edit]

  • Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 (Trailblazers) (2025), recognising young leaders across the continent for innovation, leadership, and social impact.[1]
