Portuguese researcher and initiator of Arquivo.pt
Daniel Coelho Gomes (born 1977 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese computer scientist and researcher. He was the founder and head of Arquivo.pt, a national research infrastructure that preserves digital heritage and provides public access to historical web content dating back to the 1990s; he led the service from its creation until 2025.[1][2]
Gomes is the lead editor of the academic volume The Past Web: Exploring Web Archives (Springer, 2021).[3] His research specializes in Web archiving and large-scale information systems. He has disseminated his work through numerous international conferences and has been invited as a specialist by organizations such as the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Ibict).[4][5]
Early Life and Education
[edit]
Daniel Gomes was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1977. He completed a degree in Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in 2001 and earned a PhD in Computer Engineering from the same institution in 2007. His doctoral thesis focused on designing large-scale systems for processing web data to derive evolution trends.[6]
He worked as a researcher at the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (ICAT) and the Large-Scale Information Systems Laboratory (LaSIGE).[7][8][9] During this time, he was part of the team that created ‘Tumba!’, a search engine optimized for the Portuguese web, and ‘Tomba’, the first prototype of a web archive system for the Portuguese web. He was involved in the design, development, and maintenance of these systems.[10][11][12]
After his research, he initiated the Portuguese Web Archive project at the Foundation for National Scientific Computing, which led to the public service Arquivo.pt, managed by the Foundation for Science and Technology.[13][14]
He has authored scientific publications and participated in research projects focused on digital information storage, preservation, and retrieval.[4]
He has participated in environmental activism, focusing on sustainable circular economy initiatives. In 2012, he founded the civic movement TaraRecuperavel.org to raise awareness about environmental sustainability in Portugal.[15] He has collaborated with ecological non-governmental organizations such as Quercus, Brigada do Mar[16], and the APLM – Portuguese Marine Litter Association[17]. He has also contributed to environmental sustainability laws.[18][19][20]
Between 2012 and 2021, he authored AjoLogoExisto, a blog about activism and civic awareness.[21]
Awards and recognition
[edit]
Under Gomes’s leadership, Arquivo.pt received several national and international distinctions, including the Best Digital Service award by Exame Informática (2022) and the Navegantes XXI Award for the Best Central Public Administration Project (2024).[22][23]
Gomes’s academic work has also been recognized with several distinctions:
- Best Paper Award at the Ibero-Americana IADIS WWW/Internet conference (2008).[24]
- Best Young Researcher Award at the 10th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries (ECDL, 2006).[25][26]
- Best Paper Candidate at the 6th International Conference on Web Engineering (ICWE, 2006).[27][28]
