Development

In June 2012, Deadline Hollywood reported that Kelly Asbury was discussing with Sony Pictures Animation the creation of an animated fantasy film titled Kazorn & The Unicorn. The film’s plot centered around the journey of a young man and a unicorn on a quest to find a powerful weapon and affirm his valor to his beloved. Lloyd Taylor was tasked with writing the screenplay, while Sam Raimi, Josh Donen, and Russell Hollander were set to produce.[1] Later that year, Troy Quane joined Kelly Asbury as a co-director. In November 2013, Sony Pictures Animation indicated that Kazorn and the Unicorn was still in development by updating their website with information about the film.[2]

Cancellation

The cancellation reasons are unknown. But Sony Pictures already began work on Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017).

Revival by Netflix and Kuku Studios

In October 2025, it was announced that Netflix and Kuku Studios had picked up Kazorn and the Unicorn earlier in the year, and would be releasing on its streaming service in 2026. Animal Logic was announced as the project’s animation partner. Stanley Moore was hired to replace Asbury and Quane as directors. Tim Hahn and Gregg Taylor were set to produce.

With the film’s official announcement in November 2025, Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot were revealed to be part of the voice cast.
