Sandra Mason is currently serving as President of Barbados, having assumed office after winning the 2021 Barbadian presidential election. She is the first person to hold the position of president in the country’s history.

Background

Mason taking oath as the first president of Barbados, 2021

On 12 October 2021, Mason was nominated by Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Opposition Leader Joseph Atherley to become the first president of Barbados.[1] On 20 October she was elected by both houses without opposition.[2] Mason took office on 30 November 2021,[3][4] the 55th anniversary of Independence. While she is nominally chief executive and is the sole head of state in Barbados, in practice her role is mostly ceremonial, much like her previous role as Governor-General.[5] She made her first official visit to Kenya in June 2022.[6]

As president, Mason represented Barbados at the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, and at the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023.[7][8]

2021 Election

At the time, Sandra Mason, the incumbent governor-general of Barbados, was the only candidate for the office; she was nominated jointly by the prime minister, Mia Mottley, and the leader of the opposition, Bishop Joseph Atherley.[9] Mason would have been deemed elected without a vote if there had been no objections to her candidacy.[10] However, Senator Caswell Franklyn formally objected, saying that the electors had not been notified of the election rules in advance, and claiming that the rules were made up without constitutional basis and that the ballot didn’t allow a place to vote ‘no’. Due to this objection, the joint sitting was suspended and each chamber of parliament proceeded to hold a separate vote on Mason’s nomination.[11]
