Prof. S. Vasanthapriyan

Professor S. Vasanthapriyan is a Sri Lankan computer scientist, academic administrator, and professional engineering leader. He is the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Computing at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka and currently serves as Chair of the IEEE Sri Lanka Section (2025). He has been recognized nationally for his contributions to ICT education, including the titles of ICT Educator of the Year 2022 and ICT Leader of the Year 2023.

Early life and education

Born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, Prof. S. Vasanthapriyan received his school education at Jaffna Hindu College. He earned a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from the University of Peradeniya in 2004, where he was awarded the Ashoka Amunugama Memorial Award for academic excellence. He pursued an MSc in Computer Science and Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands in 2010 and later earned a Doctor of Engineering in Computer Science from Wuhan University of Technology, PR China in 2017.

During his academic career, he received international awards including the Nuffic Fellowship Award (2007) and the Chinese Government Scholarship (2014).[1]

Academic career

Prof. S. Vasanthapriyan has over twenty years of academic experience, beginning as a lecturer at the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka in 2005. He served as the founding Head of the Department of Computing and Information Systems (CIS) from July 2011 to August 2014, where he developed an ACM/IEEE-aligned curriculum. In 2021, he led the establishment of the BSc (Hons) Software Engineering programme, which enrolled its first cohort of 58 students.

He was promoted to Professor in Computer Science in October 2019. Prior to becoming Dean, he served as Head of the Department of Computing and Information Systems from May 2020 to November 2022. He was then appointed Dean of the Faculty of Computing effective 1 January 2023. During early 2023, he also held additional responsibilities as Head of the Department of Data Science and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Computing. On 3 May 2023, he was appointed the Founding Dean of the Faculty of Computing, establishing the 9th faculty at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka.[2]

Research focus

His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, ICT in Education, Digital Transformation, Knowledge Engineering, and Software Engineering.[3]
[4]He has actively contributed to advancing these fields through both theoretical and applied research, exploring innovative approaches to intelligent systems, decision support, knowledge management, and digital solutions in education and industry. His work also encompasses practical implementations, including IoT-based smart systems, machine learning applications, and software engineering frameworks tailored to real-world challenges.
