The Campaign of Sholokh Tapsorukov aganist Kazievs was a Kabardian internal conflict led by Sholokh I Tapsorukov, the Grand Prince of the house of Talostania and his son Koroshay Murza in Lesser Kabardia. The campaign ended in a effective victory for Sholokh and death of many Greater Kabardian princes.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
The relations between Lesser Kabardia and Greater Kabardia was already bad because of Sholokhs policy to stay friendly with the Kumyks of Tarki Shamkhalate. Sholokh pursued a policy aiming to lower Moscow’s influence over North Caucasus. In 1605 , on his orders, a Kabardian detachment supported the Tarki shamkhal, Sultan-Magomed, in a fight against the Russian army under the command of the voivodes I.M. Buturlin and O.T. Pleshcheyev, The Russian regiments were routed, losing 7,000 men “excluding boyars”. The Sunzha and Koisin forts were burned. According to A. Bakikhanov, 13,000 Circassians actively participated in the defeat of the Russian army.
relations between Sholokh and Kazi Psheapshokov worsened with Kazi’s harboring of Sholokh’s rebellious brother, Pyshta Murza.
In the november of 1615, Sholokh launched a major campaign aganist the Greater Kabardian prince of Kazi Psheapshokov and devastated his dominion in Kabarda with the help of Kumyks from the Shamkhalate of Tarki and Nogais from Nogai Horde. Kazi Psheapshokov and Sholokh’s rebellious brother, Pyshta Murza, who opposed Sholokh and Lesser Kabardia was killed in battlefield by Kabardino–Nogai troops. Sholokh’s forces razed Kazi’s lands and killed many of his nephews and army, then withdrew back to his lands with success.[2][3][4][5]
Russo-Kaziev counterattack
[edit]
In the same year, after the campaign of Sholokh aganist Kazi’s Kabarda, the brothers of Kazi Psheapshokov, Kul-Murza Kaitukov, Klych Zhansohov and Chereguko Elbazdukin, together with the Terek voivode Pyotr Priklonsky, carried out a punitive expedition against Sholokh’s lands as a revenge, but they couldnt achieve full success.
Next year, in 1616, at the call of Kazi Psheapshokov’s brothers, the Crimean Khan Janibek Giray, leading a large Tatar horde, launched a devastating campaign against the lands of Sholokh Tapsarukov. Despite stubborn Kabardian resistance, the Crimean Tatars and Nogais occupied the Lower Dzhulat region. however, the eldest son of Sholokh, Koroshay Murza defeated and expelled the Nogai–Tatar forces from Kabardia, re-capturing the lands occupied by Tatars.[8]
