EcoPeace Middle east
Yana Abu Taleb is a distinguished environmental advocate, policy expert, and peacebuilder who serves as the Jordanian Director of EcoPeace Middle East, a unique regional organization that brings together Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli environmentalists to advance sustainable development, protect shared natural resources, and promote peace across the Middle East. With offices in Amman, Ramallah, and Tel Aviv, EcoPeace’s work under Yana’s leadership embodies the belief that environmental interdependence can become a foundation for regional stability and cooperation.
Since joining EcoPeace in 2000, Yana has held several leadership positions, including Deputy Director and Regional Projects Manager, amassing more than two decades of experience in cross-border environmental collaboration, water diplomacy, and policy reform. Her role as Jordan Director encompasses the design and management of national and regional projects, advocacy on environmental protection and transboundary water issues, and engagement with key governmental, diplomatic, and private sector stakeholders. She has played a pivotal role in strengthening EcoPeace’s influence on the regional and global stage by steering high-level initiatives on the Jordan River and Dead Sea rehabilitation, the Good Water Neighbors program, and the innovative Water-Energy Nexus project that envisions renewable-powered desalination as a pathway to peace and resilience.
A graduate of the University of Jordan (1996), Yana’s professional journey began in education and program management, including leading a British Council initiative to modernize educational systems in Saudi Arabia before she turned her focus to environmental policy and diplomacy. Her expertise lies at the intersection of environmental governance, resource management, and conflict transformation, and she has become one of the most respected voices in the field of environmental peacebuilding.
Yana is a frequent speaker at international conferences and policy forums, where she shares her insights on sustainable development, climate resilience, and water security in conflict-prone regions. Her thought leadership is featured in numerous global platforms, including the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) podcast Babel: Translating the Middle East and publications such as The Dead Sea Between Life and Death: Learning from Other Lakes and A Green-Blue Deal for the Middle East. She also co-authored the case study The Middle East: From an Inflammable Region to a Resilient Land of Opportunities – A Case Study of EcoPeace Middle East’s Approach to Conflict and Environmental Action, which highlights how joint environmental initiatives can drive regional cooperation.
Under her leadership, EcoPeace Jordan received the National Energy Globe Award (2022) for its pioneering solar energy project in the Jordan Valley. Her contributions have been widely recognized for bridging environmental sustainability with regional diplomacy and for advancing a model of peacebuilding rooted in shared resource management. Beyond her institutional achievements, Yana is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders through education, advocacy, and community empowerment.
A visionary and bridge-builder, Yana Abu Taleb represents the spirit of environmental diplomacy in the Middle East — turning shared challenges into opportunities for dialogue, trust, and transformation. Her work continues to inspire policymakers, practitioners, and young changemakers across the region to view environmental cooperation not only as a necessity, but as a pathway toward lasting peace.
