The first is it that wrongly dated to 1955 on the [[University of St Andrews]] as its currently in a collection where those images date it to 1955. However that incorrect. The image clearly shows the area being clear apart from the cross itself. The 1913 monuments act led to the cross being taken into statutory protection which happened 1924 when Sir Charles Renshaw died. A 1924 report recommended that a fence be placed around the cross to stop grazing cows using it as a scratching post. The image clearly shows no fence there. Comparative images of 1950’s show a fence enough to hold cows, in a square around the monument. An examination of the image shows cows in the field, placing much much earlier than 1955.

* Further, the cross itself still shows the kind of damage that was evident in the 1920’s when it was surveyed, that collaborates with the Canmore archeology evidence, rather in the 1950’s, when that damage had been repaird. It is clearly dated around 1924.}} |

- The first is it that wrongly dated to 1955 on the University of St Andrews as its currently in a collection where those images date it to 1955. However that incorrect. The image clearly shows the area being clear apart from the cross itself. The 1913 monuments act led to the cross being taken into statutory protection which happened in 1924 when Sir Charles Renshaw died. A 1924 report recommended that a fence be placed around the cross to stop grazing cows using it as a scratching post. The image clearly shows no fence there. Comparative images of 1950’s show a large fence big enough to hold cows back, in a square, around the monument. An examination of the image shows cows in the field, placing it much much earlier than 1955.
- The image also clearly shows a 1920’s gangster style car on the road, rather than 1950’s style indicating that it is an 1920’s image.
- Lastly, St Andrews University have been unable to determine the copyright on the image. I believe the reason for this is the image is of the monument when it was photographed in 1924, when it was taken into protection.
- Further, the cross itself still shows the kind of damage that was evident in the 1920’s when it was surveyed, that collaborates with the Canmore archeology evidence, rather in the 1950’s, when that damage had been repaird. It is clearly dated around 1924.
