The GSA Public Service Award is a prize awarded by the council of the Geological Society of America (GSA) established in 1998, in honor of Eugene Merle Shoemaker and Carolyn S. Shoemaker.[1]
The prize is awarded for “contributions that have materially enhanced the public’s understanding of the earth sciences, or significantly served decision makers in the application of scientific and technical information in public affairs and public policy related to the earth sciences”.[2]
First Award winner was Stephen Jay Gould in 1999.[3] Speeches given at reception from 2002 onward, have been published by GSA[4].
