Türkiye Continues Neutral Mediation Role
As one of the few countries maintaining solid relations with both Kyiv and Moscow, Türkiye has emerged as a key mediator in the conflict. Ankara has provided drones to Ukraine while simultaneously avoiding participation in Western-imposed sanctions on Russia.
Fidan expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for showing the political will to engage in peace talks. He also acknowledged former U.S. President Donald Trump for his calls to end the war, underlining the broader international effort to restore stability in the region.
Progress Noted in Previous Talks
Referring to the first two negotiation rounds—also hosted in Istanbul—Fidan highlighted that both sessions had yielded notable humanitarian results.
“We are encouraged that the prisoner exchanges conducted so far have been recognized globally for their humanitarian value,” he said.
The Turkish foreign minister further mentioned that both delegations exchanged memoranda outlining their positions on a possible ceasefire and peace roadmap during the second round—an encouraging sign for future progress.
“Our hope with this third round is that discussions will be more focused and goal-oriented, especially on the memorandums already shared by both parties,” Fidan stated.
Türkiye Offers Monitoring Support for Ceasefire
Fidan emphasized that if both sides agree to a ceasefire, Türkiye is ready to facilitate and monitor the implementation, stating that the country already possesses the necessary infrastructure to support such efforts.
“These Istanbul talks are an opportunity to demonstrate to the global community that dialogue and diplomacy can be more powerful tools for peace than war and violence.”
