Uruguayan long-distance runner
Julia Paternain (born 29 September 1999) is a long-distance runner who represents Uruguay. She was a bronze medalist in the marathon at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.[1]
Career
Paternain was born in Mexico to Uruguayan parents, before growing up in England and then studying in the United States.[2] She competed as a member of Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics Club in England.[3] She represented Great Britain at the 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships, placing sixth in the 10,000 metres race.[4]
Through her Uruguayan parents, she began representing Uruguay in January 2025. She ran a Uruguay national record in the marathon of 2:07:09 whilst competing in her marathon debut the United States that year.[2] She was a bronze medalist representing Uruguay in the marathon at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, the first medal won by Uruguay at the Championships.[5]
